Eating Problems:Help them chew.....

Hi, My 3 yr old twin boys were giving me a tough time with their meals. They absolutely refused to bite and chew into their food and I had to feed them everything in mashed form - even idlis and steamed carrots. But after they started going to playschool, they see other kids having snacks and started asking for it by name. I bought small packs of most of the stuff and tried one at a time, esp after they got back school and were real hungry. It took a while for me to persuade them to bite and take a taste. But finally they' ve learnt to bite their snacks.

Likewise, I made their food increasingly thick and of a consistency where there just cannot swallow, but have to keep it in their mouth. After a while, they realised there' s no other way, but to chew....

Hope this helps all moms who are having a tough time getting their young ones to bite and chew into their morsel of food. Good luck !!!

Hi Twin Mom,

I am facing the same problem with my 16m son.He doesnt want to chew his food at all.So all his food including fruits have to be mashed or pureed. In case i put a piece of fruit or roti or anything else in his mouth he just spits it out and keeps doing it with every morsel. So it' s war time for both of us till i finally give up.

I am really very upset with all this. Can u please suggest something.

Thanks in advance.

Subject:  Perseverance pays .....

Hi again,
It´ s almost a couple of months now since my kids started eating properly. The initial few days were mayhem, meal time was like war zone, but persistence pays. I started with their favourites - carrots, cooked beet root, etc. Soft enough and made sure that they don´ t choke. Held the pieces in my hand first and made them take a bite from it. Likewise i started with rice, dhal and ghee - not fully mased, but thick enough to make sure that they cudn´ t swallow. Started off with tiny ball sized morsels. Placed it at the tip of their tongue. And all the while was saying that only if they bit and chewed their food they will grow to be big and strong (like Hanuman, Krishna, whoever features in their meal time story that time....). After all the initial fussing and yelling, they just got used to it. Does take time, but worked well for me .... Good luck with your kid !!!
