Hi everyone,
I know others on this board have had feeding problems as well, but I wonder if anyone has advice for me. Our four-month DD has, over the past six weeks or so, become very difficult to feed. She has been on formula from the start, and ate beautifully for the first ten weeks. Then she got very fussy. At first, it seemed to be because of nipple frustration. We got a bigger nipple and it worked fro a couple of weeks. She started to eat happily. But then she started to reject the bottle again. We’ve managed over the past few weeks. But now it’s really bad. Basically, if she’s awake, she won’t eat, even if she’s hungry. She just cries until she goes to sleep. In fact, the only time she really feeds is when we “dream feed” her. Her intake is not bad for a 13.5 lb baby – she takes in about 27-28 ounces a day. But it’s really stressful when she’s awake. We don’t force her. We wait till she’s hungry. But she fights anyway. She feeds 7-8 times in a 24-hour period.
She is not teething, as far as I can tell. She doesn’t have reflux. She never spits up. No real gas problems. It doesn’t seem to be connected to the bottle or nipple either, since I’ve tried different nipples, bottles, and also different formulas. Nor does it seem linked to the position I hold her in. In fact, when I offer her water from a bottle, in the same position, with the same kind of nipple and bottle, she always takes it and loves it. But as soon as the milk bottle touches her mouth she rejects it. I’m at a loss.
Is this just a phase babies go through? Have any of you had this experience? Will she grow out of it? Or might it be connected to something specific problem? I cojld really use some feedback…
