Feeding:Pureed food or non pureed food for 141/2 months???

Hello all,

I had recently been to my dd paediatrician for her MMR AND chicken pox vaccine. We were discussing on her food pattern and I told doc that my dd has pureed food items, whether it be veg. khichdi, porridge , fruits etc. The doc. was not happy that i still feed my dd pureed food. He told me stop giving her pureed food and instead start giving her soft chapatis, dosas idlis ....i.e no pureed food.

I tried giving her but she gags and vomits. Is it true that if i puree her food she won' t ever learn to chew and eat her food in the months to follow.???

I am worried....as it is she is a fussy eater and if i do this she will not eat anything.

What shall i do?

Pls. advise experience mothers.

Hi everyone!

I know many parents are concerned about this so I will tell you what my doc said.

You should NEVER use a blender for your baby' s food. Why? Because everything is VERY pureed...into the liquidish state.

What you should do instead: boil the veggies well and take a fork and a plate and keep mashing intil soft... it will have a texture, baby won' t choke and can swallow it easily BUT he will also learn how to CHEW.

As the baby grows older, mash them more roughly.

My baby doesn' t have teeth yet but he knows how to chew even a biscuit! He' s 8 almost months old.

BOILING EGGS:
1. Make sure the egg is FRESH (there are methods available for this, jsut Google for it).
2. Wash it thoroughly
3. Put filtered water to boil
4. when the water is boiling just crack the egg open and drop the egg contents into the water
5. Boil it for 10 minutes!
6. Just take the egg yolk out and mash it.

If you have any other questions let me know. My aunt is a nurse to a pediatrician so she is teaching me all these things that no one seems to tell new mums nowadays :)

You should just feed the EGG YOLK to your baby not the egg white because the egg white it´ s more allergenic!

Hi, Thought of replying to this message because your stories remind me of the terrible time I had with my elder daughter 4.5 years now when she was small. She had reflux and used to gag and vomit at all mealtimes, pureed or unpureed. Since the output of pureed meals was better, i used to puree all her food until 2.5 years old until one day I decided that enough is enough and either she will have solid food or she will stay hungry. I had tried this earlier also for a few meals but hadnt been strong enough to continue on it. Believe me it took her a week of non - eating or very less eating to be able to gag at each meal time and then understand that she needs to chew and swallow. Also, I learnt that gagging is the only way they learn how to eat, specially the fussy eaters. Having gone through the whole process, I know how hard it can be to see your kids not eating anything when they can eat easily if the same is pureed, but a little strength now wil help in the long run. Dont be disturbed by anyone saying what you should or should not do. At the end, every mother knows what' s best for their children, I would always give myself the logic that no adult eats pureed food, so one day surely she will learn. But probably the faster you decide, the faster the whole transition can be made.

Aata Besan Halwa...

Ingredients:
Whole wheat aata - 5 teaspoons
Besan - 3 teaspoons
Pure ghee - 3 teaspoons
Sugar - 3 teaspoons

Method :

Heat ghee in a small kadai. Put aata and besan in the kadai and roast on low flame till the aatas are light brown in colour and emits a good smell.
Add sugar and approx 1/2 wati water , stir so that no lumps are formed and cook till halwa consistency is obtained.

Feed lukewarm to your child.

U can adjust sugar and water according to the sweetness and consistency that the child prefers.

VARIATION

INSTEAD OF WHOLE WHEAT AATA U CAN USE SUJI/RAWA TO PREPARE SUJI BESAN HALWA.

HOPE UR KID LIKES IT.

I definitely pledge for feeding the baby form the same food you eat. Provided it´ s not beans and gassy foods or VERY SPICY or greasy or fried!

You can do this: before you finalize the dishes you cook for your family just take aside a portion for your baby. Before you add the final pinches of salt, oil and spices and feed him that.

The LOVE it! And it´ s a good exercise for them too!

I cook separately for my dd....in the mornings it is usually oats porridge with fruits or aata besan halea or boiled egg with ragi porridge etc which is smooth almost like pureed .....lunch is usually pureed vegetable khichdi.....evening it is cerelac and dinner is either curd rice in pureed form or upma etc

Si u see i cook separately for her.

How is your child responding to non pureed food?

hey mahika,
My daughter is also 15months old...she also takes only pureed food...she have only 6months...no molars yet...so i think they cant chew properly...my daughter also rejects food if its not pureed...so i give her like tht only...let her eat whtever she likes...nothing to worry...decrease her consistency...my daughter like to eat white rice....she slowly chews it..so make her chew small small food materials by giving it to her hand...hope this helps
