Hi Everyone,
Is it better to give homemade rice porridge for a 6 month old as opposed to store bought baby rice? Can someone share a recipe for rice porridge for a 6 month old?

Hi Ora...Try making the powder as soft as possible...so that the baby does not have problems swallowing it...let it not be too grainy.

Hi Moms...

I had made this rice porridge recipe for my baby and she eat it from 6months onwards upto 1 year. You can make this around a Kg of powder and store it for 20-25days.

Step 1. Get from the market >Idli Rice - 1kg...> Sabudana(Sabakki)- 200gm....> Ohm seeds(Ajwain)- 3 teaspoons.

Step 2. Wash the 1 Kg idli rice and dry it in shade. It is done it half a day.

Step 3. Roast the entire idli rice in low flame...little by little...till you get the change in colour and a roasted smell.

Step 4. Roast the Sabudana(Sabakki)- 200gm as well..till u find the popped appearance of the grains.

Step 5. Roast the Ohm seeds(Ajwain) as well.

Step 6. Set aside for a while to let the heat eascape from the 3 ingredients.

Step 7. Mix them together and get them ground in an Atta Chakki to a fine powder.

Preparation of the porridge:

Step 1. Take 2-3 teaspoons of the powder in a cooking bowl, add a pinch of salt/ sugar(salt is preferred).

Step 2. Add a little water and make a paste, then add a cup of water into it. Remove the knots/lumps(Usually it wont have much lumps, it dissolves quickly).

Step 3. Add a little ghee and heat it on a low flame. Keep stirring. The watery solution starts becoming viscous and will turn into a semisolid kind of stuff...you should keep stirring till you find bubbles, thats when it is cooked completely.

Step 4. Cool the solution till it is warm enough for the baby to eat.

Step 5. Taste the porridge each time before you feed your baby, to check the heat of the meal. Now the porridge is ready for the baby to eat.

This meal is very filling for the babies and very convenient to carry anywhere you go. The process may look longer...but it is worth the effort and it serves as a meal for the baby for atleast 15 days. It can be served to the babies once a day initially and later on twice or thrice depending on the baby' s requirement.

Pls let me know your opinion on the same and revert back with questions.

Thank you so much for your replies. Can i make it into powder in a food processor? I live in New Zealand and so cannot find an Atta Chakki. Also can i make the porridge without ghee? Look forward to a reply.

Please try making the rice at home. Homemade is any time better than the ready made powders available
