Hi Anu
Usually kids enjoy the drinks & starters in the party rather the main menu.As you said pepsi , miranda ,etc soft drinks are very much liked by kids, but why don't u plan for rasna kind of soft drinks which are good and you get a lot of flavours in them.
As leaf has suggested you can pick accordingly.I think you better go for 2 nonveg and 1 veg starters as veggie starters go very slow.Leaf has already given u lot of items where u have a lot of choice to choose. Wishing your son a very happy birthday in advance, hope ur party goes well and goodluck.
bye
Laya

Hai
thank u both for ur reply.my son is going to be 3.we r inviting around 30-35 adults and 7 children.i prefer both north and south indian combined dishes.
what soft drinks can we have?we thought of buying drinks like miranda, pepsi e.t.c.,that too generally i thought people will like to have it after dinner only for aiding digestion.can we give it as welcome drink?
ideas and suggestions are invited.

hi anu,
i am suggesting some categories and options in them. the categories r a must and u can chose the option dishes from them, if u like.

for starters u can have :(choose 1 or more)
- dhokla with green chutney OR
- samosa with imli/green chutney OR
- aloo tikki with imli chutney/saue OR
- bhajiyas with imli chutney/sauce OR
- aloo bondas with imli chutney/sauce OR
- gobi manchurian
- chicken manchurian(non veg)
- soft drinks

if u have 1 non veg starter then have 1 veg starter. if only veg then u can have 2 of them.

for main menu:
subzi:( choose 2 or more)
- (gravy subzi) chhole OR
- (gravy subzi) mutter paneer/palak paneer OR
- (dry subzi) veggie jalfrezi OR
- (dry subzi) gobi aloo mutter OR
- chicken curry

if u have non veg curry etc then u can have 2 veg subzi.

dal(optional):
- dal makhni
- dal fry

rice: (choose 1 or 2)
- simple mixed veggie rice
- green pulao
- masala pulao
- lemon rice
- veg biryani
- chicken biryani

if 1 non veg biryani etc then have 1 rice.

roti/chapati:(choose 1)
- naan
- paratha
- puri

side dish:(choose 1)
- dahi bada
- boondi rayta
- some dahi item
- idli with sambhar
- papad
- salad

sweet:(choose 1)
- gulab jamun
- rasgulla

sorry, i cant help much with non veg items.

this is general indian menu. u can decide according to the no of persons veg and non veg...also, i am assuming there will be adults along with children.

some suggestions:
keep all the plates/spoons/fork etc ready for starters and stuff.

decorate with all the b day decorations. if possible, get the disposable plates/glasses/spoons/paper napkins/table covers etc with bday theme.

since it is a child's bday, try to keep some fun stuff...games,musical chair, dance etc for children. usually i see that all adults form their own groups and sit and chat...and the children r left alone..

get bday caps, balloons, small return gifts, chocolates etc for other children and keep them packed before hand.

u can also keep some food stuff for children(i dont know much abt it) and give it to them early(just after cutting cake) bcoz then children get tired and sleepy.

hope this helps
will add some more things as i remember.

happy bday to ur son :)
