Problems in School:School Phobia
2007-07-10
Name: Rajendra

I have a 2 year old son now going to a playgroup. For some reason he has developed phobia about the school. Actually there is no problem with the teacher or the teachig methods. All other kids are doing well. But my son is not comfortable in the school. Also he continuously repeats \" NO SCHOOL\" for the whole day. Is this a typical situation or there is something I should take action upon? Please help me out.

Hi Rajendra,

To get a better picture. I would need some specific infos:

1. Since how long is your Son going to this playgroup, and from what age?

2. When you say other students are doing well? could you explains the scenario?

Raj, lets not forget that your son is still a baby. At 2 years all these are expected.

One solution to this problem is, your spouse can be with him for sometime in school everyday provided the school allows that. She can do this till a day your son feels comfortable.

Secondly keep track of what is being done in school. Some schools are highly goal oriented that, they teach a toddler to read and write even at the age of 2. If this happens then for sure the child is going to be disappointed. At this age it has to be play related studies. Mostly they would be in the sand pit playing with junk toys. Playing with blocks and listening to stories. Anything apart form this the child is gonna dislike it.

At the age of 2 the child' s memory sequence is limited. The kids get disturbed if the schools and teachers try to push it.

Keep talking to your kid about school. What fun he can have at school etc. Speak to him when he is back as to what happened. I am sure he wont be able to tell you everything due to his age and speech ability, but this will definitely allow him to express himself and will teach him how to communicate and relate things.

These days we need to be smart parents. We need to constantly push our brains to get ideas. The idea is to prevent a problem than work on it after it occurs. All parents today lead high pressured life and they seldom forget the small details in life. They are not doing that on purpose, its just they are too tired of work or late from work.

Read stories at night. Appreciate what he does. Encourage him on this new lessons he learn from school. This sure will take of his fear or school.

Cheers!

Pete
