Problems in School:help

Dear KR,and anybody else who wishes to respond,
Found your advice to worried mom of 5th grader very useful.Im in similar situation.Son is in 4th std, cbse board this year, and from the beginning of school year, things have been quite hectic.Lots of homework, punished for not doing homework, sent out of class, beaten on the palms with a ruler. After this not just my son,but I too have beeen not feeling very good.Ive sent a note to his maths teacher about his incompletee work,(he loves maths and science). She' s asked me to meet her any school day after school hours.
Point is how to speak to teachers about the improvement they could bring to class or how to ppoint out their mistakes ina very non threatening and positive way so that, son does not get discriminated against, yet they get the message and everybody feels good at the end of it?
This is a dilemma which Ive faced earlier too as teachers or principal may not be too receptive to our ideas, yet we feel like giving inputs for our child' s sake?
Thanx in advance to all.
Raj.
