shilpa replied. hi, please watch for drinking 1 litre milk. 1 litre is too much i guess. i was told by dr not to overdo any food while nursing and was recommended only 2-3 servings of dairy products in any form.
touch wood i was able to bf until 11months nicely.
hetal, trisha and ruchi is right take healthy diet & dont panic.
rebecca i am sorry i have to disagree with you, babies need solids after 6months. i bf exclusively upto 6months and wanted to prolong bf exclusively. but at 6months my ped explained me that my baby needs more than bm.i asked if it was formula but he recommended solids.
hope this helps.
trisha replied. Hi there
For adequate milk supply thetrick is that your abbay has to suck more...its Supply matching demand system...Alsou u need to take adequate Calcium supply, daily try to drink 1 litre of milk, thats what my doc had suggested. And 2 litres of water also.and pls dont worry much it hampers milk production.best of luck....any query let me know at trisha_rit@rediff.ocm,dont visit the forum frequently
Rebecca replied. Hi Moni,
Sounds like there are a lot of things going on: 1 baby not interested, 2 pumping, 3 supply dwindling.
The ability to maintain supply while pumping can be greatly influenced by the quality of the pump. Not all women find all pumps effective. So that may be an issue for you.
Your son also isn't latching, which is probably telling your body to slow milk supply. Baby's sudden loss of interest in nursing is often called a \";nursing strike\";. Suggestions for reestablishing nursing with baby after a nursing strike include: wearing your baby (do you have a sling or a baby carrier?), sleep with your baby, lay with baby on your bare chest a couple times a day - skin to skin contact is important- while he/she is napping is a good time. Having your baby close tells your body to produce milk (amazing how the body works, no?). Putting baby on your bare chest can also stimulate his/her natural nursing instinct - you will notice this with newborns who start rooting when you do this. If there is a time of day or night when your baby used to nurse best, start with that time (often during or just after sleep) to reestablish nursing.
I was also wondering if you had introduced solids at about the same time your baby started to loose interest in nursing. If so, you could try cutting back on solids and increasing opportunities to nurse. At six months babies need about 32oz of milk with or without solids. Babies at 6 months can do fine without solids so don't worry if you cut back as long as enough milk is being provided (breast or formula).
Hetal replied. its pretty normal 4th mnth onwards. about shatavari tabs, its available in india, sometimes its available in indian stores..check for google where its available in US,sometimes whole foods or ne health stores and some websites keep it. its not advisable for everyone to take it,,please note. however being ayurvedic there are absolutely no side effects and gives good health but its advisable to take it with ashwagandha tablets, that will be available at the same place. these two are excellent for women health and they help maintain women stress levels and helps to regain energy thereby increasing your apetite.. take it for 2 days, both together, reduce 1 tab per dosage then recommended for each,,if you are comfortable with it, continue it and leave it netime you want.
about increasing milk supply,i have written alot about it somewhere,,i will try to find that link & post it to you..
apart from that, eat good diet, remain stress free,,and dont loose your heart, if your bm comes low while pumping ! relax your body,,eat or munch or drink something while pumping milk..it will relieve you from pressures :)
good luck
Ruchi replied. Hi Moni...
You can try taking Dalia(broken wheat) or Oat made in milk everyday as you breakfast or in evening time. This should really increase your BM supply. I have a 7 month kid and i have exclusively breast fed her till now...
This suggestion was given by my elders and till date touchwood i have not faced any problem with the supply.
Give a try to this....it may be a miracle for you too..:)
Have a nice time with your kid...enjoy motherhood...

Yes, the international recommendations (WHO, UNICEF, American Academy of Pediatrics, etc) are to introduce solids at 6 months. So you and your doc. are right. What I meant was that breast milk or formula (whatever you're doing) should still be the primary sources of nutrition at 6 months. Some parents do delay solids for a few weeks or even months, either becuase baby isn't interested or becuase of family allergies, but this should be done with in agreement with a pediatrician. Thanks for calling for the clarification.

I was not breastfeed in my childhood hence the idea of sucking and feeding from a woman's full, engorged breasts has infatuated me.
