Ways to Improve Writing Skills of Kids
Good writing skills can help children to do well in the academics as well as in their professional life. Let us take a look at some tips for encouraging kids to write well and improving their writing skills.

The habit of creative writing is capable of giving a lot of pleasure to a person. The ability to express oneself succinctly and clearly through the written word is an ability that will help immensely in the academic as well as professional field. Here are some ways in which you can teach your kids to write from an early age.

Praise Well Written Sentences

To encourage kids to write, you need to be able to convince your children that they are indeed capable of writing. Whenever your kid comes up with well written sentences, praise them heartily and say things like “this is a beautiful line that you have penned” and then “I wish you would write more”.
When checking kids homework praise paragraphs and answers that seem to be well constructed. Once your children gain confidence they will start writing more. For preschoolers writing a full coherent sentence is well worth of praise so make sure that you keep the age of your kid in mind while deciding on the worth of his or her efforts.

Give Writing Tasks

Once in a while you can give your children writing tasks like “write about Tina’s birthday party that you attended last evening ‘or “write about Republic Day and its significance”. Once your kids accomplish the task, make them read aloud the piece and give them meaningful feedback. In the beginning you can make your child copy paragraphs from newspaper or from his or her school text books.
Express both positive and negative feedback but mould your negative sentences in a considerate manner. For example instead of saying “this line does not seem coherent” you can say “I am sure you can frame this sentence in a better way”. Writing requires practice and keeping on writing special pieces like these will surely hone your kid’s skills.

Encourage the Habit of Reading

There is nothing that encourages the habit of writing more than reading books by good authors. Expose your children to classics written by J.R Tolkien, Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Dickens etc apart from literary giants in your native language.
Exposure to different styles of writing by the masters will encourage your child to plot stories and pen down thoughts in a coherent style. The habit of reading will also make your kid understand the nuances of different styles of writing and he or she will be in a better position to develop an original writing style.

Encourage Learning New Words

Gift your kid a dictionary and encourage him or her to read and learn new words. Once new words are learnt ask kids to apply these in new sentences. Vocabulary strengthening efforts are mandatory if children are to learn good writing skills. You can also ask your kids to apply new words in sentences and show them to you so that you can also learn from them.
Kids get a huge kick from the idea that they can get help adults learn a new skill and this will quickly encourage them to pick up more and more new words and apply them.

Offer Mental Support

Kids are sensitive people and small things like an insensitive comment by teachers, peers or friends can discourage them. Whenever you see your kid faltering in the resolve to write because of a dent in confidence, step in with lots of moral support and encouragement.
If your child writes a poem, an essay or a short story then step in with sensible praise and support even if you personally feel that the effort is not top notch. Building up confidence in the ability to write is one of the primary ways a parent can encourage children to write well.
Now that you have learnt these tips that tell you how to encourage kids to write, do not waste any more time before you try applying them.

Regularly asking kids to copy and write paragraphs from newspapers and story book can be of great help. It can also help to improve the vocabulary of children. We must also teach children to refer dictionary if they don't understand the meaning of a particular word.
