Harmful Effects of Technology on Developing Children

Children do not understand how to use technology the right way. Therefore, such ignorance can have negative effects on their development. Read on to know more about the harmful effects of technology on developing children.

It is true that we cannot function without technology. Google has become our go to aid. For kids and for adults, Wikipedia is an absolute boon. Every moment of our lives are being documented, posted and shared on social media. One cannot imagine a time without a cell phone, a computer or a television. Yet we must examine the various damaging effects this very technology is having on kids.

An adult might be mature enough to know where to draw the line when it comes to technology, but kids necessarily are not aware of that. There are awareness programs for kids but daily exposure to technology has some long term damaging effect on kids. Given are a few.

Learning Gets Affected

Kids are at every single moment using technology for entertainment as well as schoolwork. Few kids can imagine completing their projects without a little help from YouTube. They can get information on literally anything at the click of a button.  It does greatly aid in their education and learning, but is it as good as it looks on the surface?

There are several negative sides of this. Though the net has a huge collection of verified, accurate information, yet the number of fraudulent sites is no less. Anyone can post information as long as they have internet. A child might not be able to discern real from fake. They can gain wrong information and knowledge which can hinder their learning.

Danger from Pervert Minded People

Social media has been extremely helpful in connecting people with others. Your kid can stay up to date on the happenings in the school and make friends with people from other schools, widening their social arena. But this can be damaging.

Developing children do not have a fair judgment of characters. They can on the social media, be easily misled by someone who has wrong intentions. Fake accounts are not a few. They can arrange personal meetings with your unsuspecting kids and do harm.

Physical Growth Gets Hampered

Doctors claim that technology is seriously ruining the health of kids. Kids are so addicted to technology that they have forgotten the joys of playing outdoors. They have become couch potatoes, gaining weight, developing various complicated diseases due to their addiction to technology.

Continuous exposure to technology is also creating attention disorders in them increasing their risks of having heart diseases, damaging their eyesight, their capability to think, to name a few. The more time one spends with technology the more they drift away from reality.

Exposure to Inappropriate Content

Through technology children are these days exposed to a variety of different things, not all good. While they are learning about a lot of things, many harmful things are also getting stored in their brains. In the social media, nothing is censored. Your children can come across violent videos, sexual images, drug abuse, and stories of crimes. All these might leave a negative impression on your developing child.

The social media also shows many things that are unattainable. Kids follow their favorite celebrities, and try to copy them, trying to attain their body structure and live their lifestyle. Children develop a wrong sense of reality.

Disturbed Routine

Using technology 24/7 can have a serious effect on the sleeping habits of your child. They are so addicted that they even keep using technology at night, not sleeping properly. Even if they try to sleep they are unable to. They become night owls, which has a negative effect on their health.

It is a good measure to limit technology usage of your child. Make sure that they do not have any gadgets when they go to bed. Avoid keeping anything in the bedroom. Educate them about the negative things on the web and ask them to be careful of them.

Can technology affect the growth and development of children? What kind of negative effects can technology have on the development of children? How to save children from the negative effects of technology? Discuss here.
