Natural Contraception Methods

Couples who want to avoid pregnancy opt for various contraceptive options. Natural method of contraception is one of the methods to avoid pregnancy. This method if used properly can effectively help in family planning. Read on to know more about this method of contraception and its pros and cons.

Natural methods of contraception or family planning help couples to determine when sexual intercourse can and cannot result in pregnancy. During the monthly menstrual cycle of a woman many changes occur in the body. By keeping an accurate track of these changes it is possible to plan and have intercourse to avoid or achieve pregnancy.
Natural methods of contraception do not require any medication, physical devices, or surgery to prevent pregnancy. These methods rely on woman's fertility awareness of her body's natural functioning to figure out the exact timing of the fertile period and ovulation. This basically involves monitoring and tracking certain changes that occur in a woman's body in order to try to predict the most fertile period in the monthly cycle.
During each menstrual cycle, at the time of ovulation eggs are released. The egg moves toward the uterus through the fallopian tubes, where the fertilisation finally may take place. If the egg is fertilised pregnancy may occur. If not an unfertilised egg can survive for up to 12 hours and will be shed automatically during the monthly periods. The chances of conception are highest if sexual intercourse takes place just before or immediately after ovulation.

Indicators of Fertility

Couples desiring to make use of natural methods to avoid pregnancy must learn to accurately identify the phases of fertility. This can be done by observing and recording some of the indicators of fertility like
  • Basal body or waking temperature
  • Cycle length
  • Changes in cervix
  • Cervical mucus secretion
Normally a multiple indicator approach comprising of a combination of temperature and mucus or sympto-thermal approach is the most effective in accurately predicting the ovulation period

Using Online Tools for Calculating Ovulation

Another method of preventing or planning a pregnancy is to find out the most fertile days through online ovulation calculator. You need to enter the date of first day of your last menstrual period and the length of your menstrual cycle based on which your most fertile days will be calculated. If you are planning a pregnancy, you need to have sex during the most fertile days so that the chances of getting pregnancy are high. On the other hand if you want to avoid pregnancy you need to abstain from sex during your most fertile days.
Although, this method is not one of the reliable methods of birth control, it can provide protection against pregnancy if it is followed properly. This method is more suitable for women who get periods regularly and the length of their menstrual cycle does not vary over the months. But couples who are not planning a baby have to use this method at their own risk as there is no guarantee that the pregnancy may not happen.

Natural contraception methods are very effective and safe. Though they do not protect against venereal diseases but they sure can be the best contraception method in monogamous relationships. There need to be more awareness about these methods.
