Can your child roller skate? If your answer is in the negative, your child is
missing out on one of the most interesting activities he can indulge in
for hours on end. Here are just some of the reasons you should invest
in a pair of skates for your child.
Easy
Skating is easy to learn, all it takes is practice. Most children pick up skating within a day. Elbow and knee pads protect your child against bruises and scratches.
Solo activity
Your child does not need company for roller skating. All he needs are a pair of skates, and the right mood. He can strike out whenever he fancies, and skate around the block or around the building compound on his own. If your child is skating in a public place it is best that he is accompanied, for safety purposes.
Economical
You don't
require membership to any club, and you don't need to shell out
enormous fees to pay an instructor. Sports like tennis are extremely
enjoyable as well, but they do require tennis rackets, balls, court
fees, coach fees, and are not very light on the pocket. True, they are
worth the investment, but until then, rollerblading is a great way to
keep your child active and involved in a sporting activity. Skates are
relatively inexpensive.
Exercise
Roller
staking is great exercise for your child, so if your child spends a lot
of time in front of the television or doing his homework, this is a fun
way to get him to move around a little. It also strengthens the legs.
Balance
Teaching your child roller skating
inculcates a sense of balance in your child, which will hold him in
stead later on. He will be able to pick up other skills that require
balance like cycling, skateboarding or rollerblading, faster. This
ability increases his confidence, and also opens opportunities for
various other sports and activities, making him more sports-minded and
athletic.
Extracurricular activity
Roller skating
can make for a great extra curricular activity. It is a skill that not
every child knows, and this in itself can be a source of confidence for
your child. It is also a lot of fun, and most children love roller skating.
Safe
Falling while roller skating
is rarely as dangerous as falling while cycling. Make sure your child
does not skate in an area where cars are passing. Certain parking lots
are safe however; you would be the best judge. If your children roller skate in the parking compound, move the society to install mirrors on corners, so a car will be able to see children skating, cycling or playing around the corner.
Encourage
a rollerskating culture in your neighbourhood. For your child's next
birthday, have a rollerskating theme. Have the party outdoors, and
encourage children
to wear rollerskates. You could also try and teach your child's friends
skating. You will be amazed with the speed at which a skating culture
can catch on. Before long, your child will be skating with a huge group
of friends.
In various countries around the world cycling and rollerskating paths are set up alongside main roads, and children
and adults perform errands on skates. Often, people that live close to
their offices, go to work on skates, as they believe it is a great way
to get some exercise into their routine. Not only is it good for your
body, it is also economical (as you save on petrol), and great for the
environment. And you're not exhausted and sweaty when you reach work,
as you would be if you jogged. And, once again, it's a lot of fun! So
visit the nearest toy store and surprise your child with a pair of skates, and watch him fly!

i have to agree that roller skating is a very fun and healthy sport. it builds physical strength and coordination for people of all ages. i started skating after going to a friend's birthday party at the local roller rink. originally i wanted to take a few classes just to learn how to skate, but i ended up getting so much more than that. i ended up absolutely adoring the sport and got involved in roller skating's figure skating program, which by the way is much more affordable than ice. 14 years later, i've traveled all over the world competing in competitions and now i'm coaching and passing on the love for roller skating.
