Ways Negative Language Impact Children

Negative language can create a far reaching and irreversible negative impact on children. Find out the ways in which negative language impact children.

We should always deal with children sensitively. Children have impressionable minds and everything you do or say can leave an impact on them. Children are innocent and believe almost everything you say or do hence take care to only use the right words and language with them.

Sometimes the more you scream and shout at kids, the more they become unruly. They do not want to listen when you shout. However, the minute you calm down and soften, they automatically listen and do whatever you say. Positive language has a stronger positive impact. Anything said in anger will only hurt them and may even result in further disobedience however gentleness and softness will help them and change the behaviour.

Thus, you can see that negative language is of no use however a positive tone and way of talking results in better understanding. Following are a few ways in which negative language can be replaced with positive thinking. Hence choose your words well:

Examples of Replacing Negative Language with Positive Sentences

 “Stop running”  “Please walk”
“Don’t keep troubling”  “Please sit still”
“Why don’t you understand”  “Please learn”
“What is wrong with you”  “There’s a better way to do it”
“No dirtying the house”  “Play outside in the fresh air”
“No climbing”/”Don’t climb on bed or table”  “Please keep your feet on the floor”

Parenting is an Art and Skill

Thus, you can see how instructions to kids should always be positive instead of negative. Don’t worry about whether kids will understand or not. They will definitely follow your instructions if your tone is warm and loving. There are many types of parents in the world and authoritarian parents expect kids to be afraid of them. You should not instil fear in your kids. Children who grow up in a positive and good environment are more likely to be successful.

Disciplining Kids is Important

It is good to discipline kids and teach them to be well-mannered however they should obey you without disliking you. Being overly strict or negative can cause more problems and fights. There are positive methods to discipline your children and you must realize that you cannot have too many expectations from them. Let them do whatever makes them happy without the use of force or harsh punishments.

Impact of Negative Language on Kids

-Such children may be more aggressive
-They may be overly shy or act fearful
-They experience difficulty in social situations
-They may suffer from anxiety or become depressed
-They lack self-esteem and confidence

Adopt a Positive Approach

Negative language hinders communication and prevents the parents and children from developing a close bond. Instead of telling kids off all the time, tell them more about your dreams and plans for them and what you expect from them. Make it clear that misbehaviour will not be tolerated and always have patience with kids. You learn from experience and as you watch your kids grow you will realize how precious they are. Hence, limit the number of ‘No’s’ in your child’s life by adopting a positive attitude.

Proper Development and Growth

Children of parents who use negative language may develop negative thoughts and start thinking negatively. If you want your child to be strong, independent and fearless – then you must start using positive and appropriate language. Children’s brain develops through the use of positive language and interactions right from birth. The amount of care they receive even during the early childhood years will determine how well they are able to adapt to situations and circumstances later on in life.

Relationship with children develops right from birth and the more you encourage and stimulate your child in a positive manner, the better it will be for them. The environment at home makes a deep impact on kids. A proper and positive environment at home leads to better performance in school as well. There are no perfect parents or children in the world and everything is learned from experience. Positive thinking in kids is possible only when they are happy without stress. Using positive language is a great way to bring up your kids.
