Behavioural Problems:Reading and Math Center for my 5 year old
2003-08-02
Name: Sweetie

Hi,
I am a very worried mother, I have a 5 year old girl, she will be 6 in a couple of weeks. She will be starting First grade here in the U.S.

All along, I have been working with her everyday on simple math, reading skills and a lot of other things.

Last night, I decided to take her to a Kumon Math and Reading learning center here in my area (I live in the U.S. in Texas, in the Dallas area) and have her tested and possibly look into having her tutored there.

To my dissapointment, I realized quickly I at the present time cannot afford to place her in the center right now.

When they tested her, I know she was nervous and was not performing to the level she does here with me. They (the teachers) were telling me she needs alot of help.

But I know she knows the material, she was just under pressure, she is very timid and shy, if she would have had time to loosen up, she would have worked more quickly.

I feel sad because I cannot afford this center, I don't want my child to be suffering in school.

Last year in Kindergarten, her teachers said she was doing fine, she was considered advanced.

Should I believe the Kindergarten teachers that have nothing to gain from telling this, or the Learning center teachers that want new students in their program?

I have not made an issue to my child. I don't want to stress her.

Any advice? Any one with suggestions, please give them to me, I am much in need to hear what I can do.

Thank you in advance!
Sweetie

Hello

Just writing to say that there really doesnot seem to be a problem there. Your bundle of joy is just trying to adjust to new things and studies. Since she is doing fine with you shows that she is quite good. Dont bother much.
Bye take care.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond...

My daughter is doing really well with me at home and her work I prepare for her. She seems to be really excited about learning and I realize this, after reading from everyone...I should not worry...

I need to just take it easy and not let my child get a sense of pressure from me.

This week, First grade started and so far, she is excited and guess what...she is looking forward to being given homework to do.

Thank you so much for your comforting words, I feel better.

Sincerely,
Sweetie

I am a parent of a daughter in the same age group. Personally, i do not see a problem here. Every parent is concerned about giving the best to their child. Your child takes some time to adjust to an environment before starting to perform.

To my understanding, just relax. Push the overall grooming. Your worry should not start reflecting on the child. Remember, they have a very strong sixth sense.

Cheers

wow Sandeep you gave such a nice suggestion.
I have a 5yr old boy. I to try giving him HW and make him read and stuff like that.
To tell frankly he is very good kid. He does his best and all the teachers say good things about him.
That main thing I wanted to tell Sweetie is I use to put pressure on him to read and write.
It was not good. I realized it.
Now I act as friends. We set a side some time to do fun things and educational things.
He is so interested in learning. Now he knows even things like solar system and about ant families and stuff like that. We regularly go to library, pick books, and read them.
So, I totally agree with Sandeep.

Hi there,
Thank you so much for your reassurance and also for taking the time to respond. I feel better, I will relax and not let my little girl become stressed out about this issue I had. I will just take it one step at a time and be happy my child is an eager learner.

Thanks again :)
