Weight Concerns:Underweight child
2002-12-21
Name: Vijay My daughter is 4 years old, and still she weighs barely 13 kgs. Alll her friends tease her that they can see her bones, but there is little that I can do. She just REFUSES to eat. It seems that the sight of food just puts her off, and if I try to persuade her she just throws a tantrum. I am thinking of starting her on some pills which make people feel hungry. But I don't know if they are acceptable for small chiuldren.

Dear Sir/Madam,

My son, Namit , two years back , when he was 3.1/2 yrs old, was not eating food properly, he used to have constant cough, cold, regular health problem & we were suppose to visit doctor at least 4-5 times per month. Doctors fees & medicine bill were around Rs. 1500 per month (in Mumbai).

Maybe try getting your child to watch TV or tell her an exciting story as a distraction while you try to feed her.

First of all it is really sweet that you as a father are so concerned. Most of the times it is the mother, and the fathers simply do not bother! I had a similar problem with my older shild, and what worked was giving him the opportunity to tell me what HE would like to eat for lunch and for dinner. It seemed that when the child has himself decided on the menu, he cannot say that he does not want it, and so will on his own accord start eating, just to show that he was right in his selection. You can also have other family members praise him for his choise of dishes.
