Living Daily Day-to-Day Life with an Autistic Child

Living Daily Day-to-Day Life with an Autistic Child

An autistic child needs more love and attention than a normal child. Dealing with autistic child is not tough but it needs some amount of adjustments on the part of the family members. With some adjustments in day to day activities, autistic children can lead a normal hassle free life. Let us learn the ways by which you can make living with an autistic child much easier.

Autism has been an issue of public interest for a quite some time now. People are taking keen interest in learning about autism and creating awareness. Autism is a serious issue as it affects the child developmental process. They have impaired social and communication skills along with repetitive behaviour and obsessed interests.

It is a hard time for parents of an autistic child to accept and move ahead with the fact that their child is autistic. Living with an autistic person is a challenging job that requires a large amount of patience.

However, parents can make living daily life with autistic children normal to an extent just like living with other children. As members of a family each individual has its likes and dislikes, tastes and preferences regarding garment shopping, food, etc at a routine level. Dealing with an autistic child just requires a different and novel approach in order to make your daily routines normal and easy.

How to Cope with an Autistic Child?

Here is what you can do to make your daily day-to-day routine life easy living with an autistic child.

Managing Mealtime

Handling meals at the right time can be a task for parents of autistic children. However, this stress can be diminished by letting your child eat as per his preferences. If your child persists on eating peanut butter sandwich daily for breakfast and not lunch, let him enjoy eating it. Let the child eat what he wishes to as long as it falls within the guidelines of a healthy and nutritious diet. All the child needs is a nutritious diet enriched with the required vitamins and other nutrients for a healthy growth.

Teaching Basic Hygiene

Combing hair, brushing teeth, clearing dirt from nails, wearing clothes and shoes on your own are some of the daily grooming tasks that we follow. However, when it comes to autistic children parents have to remind them about taking care of themselves and following the basic grooming needs. As parents you not only have to remind the child about it every day but more than once in the day. Constant reminders will help the child take good care of itself after a certain age on its own without help. However, for children having severe autism parents have to do all the above activities till a time and age where a parent usually stops doing it with a regular child.

Coping with Clothing Choices

Autistic children can be very choosy about their dressing. They may like the feel of certain soft and satiny fabrics and may find another fabric very itchy and poky. Let them wear what they want. As long as their choice of fabric fits into your budget buy it for them. All you have to care about is the fitting of the fabric and its cleanliness. Making autistic people follow trends and fashion styles should not be a major issue. Allow them to exhibit themselves in the form of their clothing.

It is advisable to take the child for shopping for its clothes and accessories as much as possible. This will help the child select its own choice of dresses sparing you from the hassle of buying clothes which it will not like. Avoid buying clothes of your own choice thinking the child will like it only to reject it. Once rejected, a second look is rare.

For some reason, autistic children are very sharp in remembering things. Even if you show the dress after a very long time, the child will recognise it despite the time. Hence, it is crucial to take the child shopping with you and let it buy its own clothes and accessories.

Life of an autistic child is a challenge both for the child and his parents. This developmental disorder manifests itself in form of impaired social and communication skills. Life of an autistic child can be made easy and normal with patience and loving care. The approach to deal with autistic child is different from that of a normal child. It calls for some adjustments in daily routine. Just some minor adjustments will make a whole lot of difference in the life of an autistic child. Follow the above points and make your daily life easy with an autistic child.

A few adjustments and your household routine will seem normal and ordinary despite of it being unique and different from other regular households. Just one step at a time and your family will lead a regular and happy life.
