Yeast Infection during Pregnancy

Yeast Infection during Pregnancy

Due to the bodily changes the probability of catching yeast infection during pregnancy is higher. Therefore, it is a must to take right precautions to prevent it. Read on to learn more about yeast infection during pregnancy.

One of the common infection expectant mothers have to deal with is the vaginal infection. Also known as yeast infections, the condition is termed as monilial vaginitis or vaginal candidiasis. The disease has its origins in microscopic fungi.

Understanding the Presence of Yeast inside the Body

It is important to understand that yeast is always present in the vagina and the intestinal tract. However, when the growth of yeast in your body surpasses that of the other organisms, the infection occurs. During pregnancy, due to the higher levels of estrogen, the vagina produces extra glycogen, thus helping the growth of yeast. Research studies carried out in the field have concluded that the unusual amount of glycogen in the vagina causes the yeast to grow fast and stick to the walls of the vagina.

Yeast infection also results from the intake of antibiotics. The frequent or long term use of antibiotics helps in killing off the targeted bacteria. However, the same antibiotics can also cause an effect on the other bacteria in the vagina, thus causing the unusual growth of yeast in the vagina.

The First Symptoms of the Yeast Infection

The symptoms of yeast infection need to be understood at an early stage. The primary reason for this is that if these symptoms are not treated at the right stage, they can plague the body and hold it captive for a long period. The basic symptoms include itchiness, irritation, burning and redness inside the vagina, along with soreness. The other symptoms include a vaginal discharge that is white in colour, and is colourless. During urination, if one feels a burning sensation, it could be due to a yeast infection. Persistent discomfort of pain during sex can also be a result of an untreated yeast infection.

Treating and Eliminating the Yeast Infection

For fortunate reasons, treating the yeast infection is not an arduous task. If suspicious, expectant mothers should have their vaginal discharge sent to a practitioner for diagnosis. This helps to check the exact reason for the discharge and eliminate the possibility of other symptoms.

The availability of antifungal medication makes for an easy method to treat the yeast infection. However, it must be noted that expectant mothers are required to be careful about the medication they take. The medicine should only be taken on prescription as the symptoms might be a result of some sexually transmitted disease as well.

Practitioner often suggests an antifungal cream to treat the yeast infection, along with the relevant medication. Studies have shown that expectant mothers who take up the yeast infection themselves end up missing the real cause, and increase the possibilities of other issues in their body instead of curing the actual one.

While the cream shall take its time to cause a recovery when applied inside the vagina or just outside it, one can seek relief in ice-packs and cool baths. The antifungal cream should be applied at night as that gives it a greater time period to heal. Cream applied for shorter durations during the day might not result in the recovery one hopes.

Safeguarding the Baby from the Infection

No one wants their unborn child to be at the receiving end because of any infections or conditions during pregnancy. In case of a yeast infection, the baby is in no immediate danger. However, during labour, the child could be affected by the disease as it passes through the canal. This causes a yeast infection in the baby’s mouth, which is not threatening, and is known as thrush.

Practicing healthy living habits, like proper clothing, cleansing of body, eating, and consistent monitoring help in the lowering of the probability of yeast infections. Thankfully, yeast infection does not put you in a fix and can be easily treated, if detected at the right time.
