Savitribai's Brave and Fearless Acts of Educating Women

Take a quick look at the story on how Savitribai Phule bravely struggled for improving women’s rights in India.

Saviribai was a brave, strong and fearless woman. She was a pioneer in helping Indian women get the basic right to education. She struggled a lot to encourage young girls to come out of their homes and acquire education. In the orthodox Indian society, letting girls go out of their homes to acquire education from male teachers was considered taboo. At the same time due to casteism girls as well as boys belonging to lower caste were deprived of education. In such a scenario she took a bold step to reform the Indian society.

Her husband Mahatma Jotirao Phule was also a social reformer who worked towards the eradication of untouchability, casteism and gender discrimination. So, along with her husband, Savitribai decided to take a step towards educating women. To complete her mission, she had to educate herself first. She completed her primary education at home with the help of her husband. After completing her primary education, the responsibility of educating further was taken by Jotirao’s close friends Sakharam Yeshwant Paranjpe and Keshav Shivram Bhavalkar. She also took two teacher training programs and became India’s first female teacher.

After completing her education, she along with her husband joined hands with Sagunabai who was also a revolutionary working for women’s rights. The three of them started a school. The school was started in Bhide Wada which was owned by Tatya Saheb Bhide. Tatya Saheb allowed the trio to start the school in his Wada as he was very inspired by their work. Their hard work paid off and altogether they could start three schools for girls in Pune. Their struggle for providing the basic right to educating girls was much difficult than it seems. Savitribai had to face the verbal abuse. People would even throw stones and cow dung at her for breaking the community norms of that time to encourage girls and downtrodden to get educated. Savitribai never looked back and continued her struggle. Indian women are at the top of the world today as a result of courage, fearlessness, and bravery that she showed. She is the goddess of the education world and role model of innumerable women.

Moral: Having courage can help you to do the things that are next to impossible.
