The Diaphragm

The Diaphragm

The diaphragm prevents the sperm from entering the uterus, thus preventing pregnancy. It provides protection against venereal diseases. Get more information on this method of birth control, read on.

The diaphragm is an old and trusted method of birth control. It is 85% effective. It is a dome-shaped rubber cup with a flexible rim that fits over the cervix and prevents the sperm from entering the uterus. You will need a prescription to get a diaphragm, as it has to be fitted to your size. The vagina expands slightly during intercourse. Thus, if the diaphragm is too small it may be dislodged, while one that is too large may be uncomfortable. The sexual position in which the diaphragm is most likely to get dislodged is when the woman is on top. You should try inserting the diaphragm for the first time with the doctor or nurse's guidance.

The diaphragm should be inserted before intercourse and should remain in place for at least eight hours, but not more than twenty-four hours afterwards, else there is a chance of developing vaginal discharge or a uterine infection. It is advisable to apply additional cream or jelly before each time you have intercourse while the diaphragm is in place.
When you remove the diaphragm after use, you should wash it in mild soap and water, rinse and dry it well and soak up the moisture by powdering it with cornstarch. Check the diaphragm for holes every time you wash it. If you have gained or lost more than 5 kgs., or have had a baby, or a miscarriage, or an abortion, then you are likely to need a change in diaphragm size. You should get your diaphragm checked and replaced every two years irrespective of whether the size has changed or not.
The diaphragm has little or no effect on the sensation during sex. It provides moderate protection against venereal disease. Insertion and removal can be a messy process.

Advantage of Using a Diaphragm

Let us take a look at some of the benefits of using diaphragm.

Diaphragms are long-lasting and reusable

Unlike other contraceptives like condoms or sponges, there is no need to dispose the diaphragm after a single use and it can be used over and over again. It can be used for the period of 2 years provided that right care of it is taken and it is examined by the doctor after a year.

It is Easy to Use

Diaphragm is easy to use. It can be easily inserted and removed and do not cause inconvenience while inserting or removing like other contraceptives. No assistance is required for insertion or removal of diaphragm after the guidance on insertion and removal is taken from the doctor. Due to its compact size, it can be carried anywhere and can also be kept safely even in a small purse.

Helps to Make Sex More Pleasurable

A diaphragm does not interrupt sex and as it cannot be felt by either of the partners, it can help to make sexual intercourse a more pleasurable experience. Also, it is required to be inserted 2 hours before the intercourse so that it does its work of preventing the pregnancy properly. As it is inserted in advance and it guarantees complete protection, the couple does not have to undergo the stress of an unwanted pregnancy at end moment.

No After Effects

Women who use diaphragm do not have to worry about the after effects immediately after use or in future. They do not have any hormones and the health of women is not affected in any way due to its use.

Disadvantage of Diaphragm

Spermicide is needed to be applied to the diaphragm and if it is used for the longer time, it can cause irritation to the vagina. Spermicide or the material of which diaphragm is made of may not be suitable for some women which can cause allergic reaction. Also it does not provide protection from sexually transmitted diseases. It may not sometimes fit properly due to certain body changes caused because of weight gain etc.
If you are opting for diaphragm as a contraception option, you must use it according to the guidance of your doctor. In case if any discomfort is caused while using it, you must immediately notify it to your doctor.

I preferred diaphragm over other methods of birth control as I find them easy to use. I get serious side effects from hormonal contraceptives. Moreover the best part is that it is cost effective.
