Respiratory System

Some common medications if used indiscriminately have side effects. They should be used with caution and under Doctor's prescription. Here are some medicines and their contra indications.

Dry cough

Product: Codeine
For Children: Should be avoided below 1 year
For Pregnant Women: Caution - May adversely affect the baby's breathing if taken during labour
For Breastfeeding Mothers: Caution
Contra-indications*: Chronic renal and hepatic dysfunction
Caution: May be habit forming

Anti-asthmatic

Product: Salbutamol and Terbutalin Sulfate
For Children: Caution in children below 12 years. Caution with the syrup in less than 2 years
For Pregnant Women: Caution - Adverse effects unlikely with the aerosols
For Breastfeeding Mothers: Caution - use only if clearly indicated
Contra-indications*: Chronic renal and hepatic dysfunction
Caution: ---------

Anti-histamines

Product: Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Diphenhydramine
For Children: ---------
For Pregnant Women: Caution
For Breastfeeding Mothers: ---------
Contra-indications*: ---------
Caution: Causes drowsiness

Anti-malarials

Product: Chloroquine, Quinine
For Children: Reduced dose necessary
For Pregnant Women: High doses may affect the baby.
For Breastfeeding Mothers: Caution
Contra-indications*: Renal and hepatic impairment, epilepsy
Caution: ---------

Anti-helmenitics

Product: Mebendazole
For Children: Contra-indicated in age below 2 years
For Pregnant Women: Contra-indicated
For Breastfeeding Mothers: Use with caution only if clearly indicated
Contra-indications*: Impaired renal function
Caution: Blood count to be monitored

Anti-fungal

Product: Clotrimazole
For Children: No specific problems
For Pregnant Women: No evidence of risk to the developing baby
For Breastfeeding Mothers: No evidence of risk
Contra-indications*: Hypersensitivity
Caution: Should not be used during menstrual cycle

Anti-amoebics

Product: Metronidazole
For Children: Reduced dose necessary
For Pregnant Women: Contra-indicated - safety not established
For Breastfeeding Mothers: Caution
Contra-indications*: Chronic hepatic and renal disorder
Caution: ------------

*Not to be used in the conditions stated, because it could cause complications
