Mattress Matters

Mattress Matters

We spend one-third of our lives in bed, but spend way too little time selecting the right mattress.

"I stay in a furnished rented apartment," says Neeta, a software programmer based in Bangalore. "And we've just been using the mattress provided by the landlord. We did spend money on setting up the house by buying a few paintings, vases etc, but investing in a mattress was not a priority."

"I just picked up a firm mattress, assuming it will give the best support," says Radha, a housewife, echoing the incorrect sentiment shared by many.
It is important to test many mattresses and select the one that evenly supports your body and feels comfortable. The right mattress will support your body at all pressure points, and that will vary from person to person. A little research will go a long way in helping you select a mattress.

What to consider

There are a wide variety of options available in the market today. Here are some points to consider when you set out to purchase a mattress.
  • It is best to purchase a mattress of high quality. Look for the components of the mattress. The coils or springs inside the mattress and the padding affect the comfort and support it provides. Do not compromise on the quality even if it means spending a bit more.
  • Make sure there are clear instructions for mattress care. Taking proper care can make the mattress last a long time.
  • Another important thing to consider is the frequency with which it is going to be used. Will it be used in the guest room or the master bedroom and how many people will use it?
  • Last but not the least, make sure the mattress is suitable for the person who will use it. As the human body ages, you may need to change your mattress to suit the physical changes.

When to buy

Replace your mattress every 8 to 10 years. Knowing when to buy a new bed may be as important as what to look for in a mattress. Priya lives in a joint family. "Our family is large and most of our furniture is shared and interchanged. Changing mattresses is not important." Like Priya, there are many who may be sleeping on the bed their parents slept on. These are "tired" beds and sleeping on these leads to sleeping difficulties and backaches. Check if the foundation of the mattress is worn out so when setting out to make a purchase, plan to replace both the mattress and the foundation.
Sreeja, an interior decorator has a suggestion. "A bed is a very personal thing. A good combination to look for can be a slightly stiff bed, with a soft pillow-top. You can even buy a layer of memory foam as your pillow-top and put that on top of your mattress." Remember that you are the best judge of comfort for yourself so try the mattress first before buying. After all, it can mean a better nights sleep and a body with less aches and pains!

NOTE: If you have a medical condition, it is advised that you consult your doctor first.
