How to Help Your Child Prepare For School Tests

How to Help Your Child Prepare For School Tests

Exam times brings with them nervousness and anxiety. Here are tips for parents to help their child get ready for the test.

Only a few decades back children had to face their first test only after they were in primary school. However, today there are some tests that are carried out at the age of 3 and parents become worried how to help their preschooler prepare for the test. Are you wondering how you can help your child get ready for the test without pressurizing him in any way?
Today, there are plenty of skill and knowledge tests that are carried out for children of very tender age. Most of the parents do not want to miss these opportunities and wish their child excels in these tests. For preparing your child to face the test smartly and get a positive experience, you can do several things.
One of the most important things that you should do is help your child relax and calm down. Most of the children get nervous and this is not because they fear the test questions, but the environment and being away from their parents make them feel uneasy. So, before working on helping your child prepare for test you should watch out symptoms of nervousness in your child.

Symptoms of Children Being Nervous Before Tests

Sometimes children convey their feelings honestly, but most often they try to hide their nervousness. The following changes in their behaviour indicate that they are anxious about the test and stressed. When your child is
  • Complaining about headache
  • Sweaty
  • Fidgeting and not trying to leave you or your hands
  • Looking upset and disturbed
  • Getting upset or angry on simple matters
  • Finding difficulty concentrating on almost anything
  • Having sleep problems
  • Showing nervous habits like nail biting or fidgeting
  • Refuses to go to school
  • Showing no signs of enthusiasm for the activities he used to enjoy
  • Complaining excessively

Tips for Parents to Help their Child Get Ready for the Test

Here is how you can help your child get ready for the test.

Help Child Calm Down

The first and the most important thing that parents should do is helping their child relax. Teaching the child to take deep breath and help him take things positively, you can assure him that he will do well in his tests.

Moral Support

Since your child is small it is obvious that you have been with him to help him prepare for the test. No matter whether your child has prepared properly or not, when the time of the test arrives you should not make him aware of the times when he could have paid more attention and prepared better. Just give him moral support and help him develop self confidence.

Talk About His Feelings

It is a proven formula that talking about the matter or feeling helps to get rid of the negative feelings. If you find symptoms of nervousness in your child, talk to him and let him express what exactly he is feeling at that moment.

Discuss Strategies

Help your child to discuss strategies when he would get stuck in some question during the test. Give him a safe way out so that he calms down before the test.

Talk Positive

Instead of making your child find what he will not be able to do, let him gain confidence by thinking what he can do well and what he will be able to manage in the test in a better way.
Most of the children feel nervous before test. It is quite normal because all of them want to perform well and get appreciated also. By establishing good and regular study habits and helping your child prepare well for the tests by minimizing other distractions, you can develop confidence in him and help him do better in test.
