Understanding Child's Brain Development

Understanding Child's Brain Development

All human beings are born with a brain gifted by God at birth. Find out more about brain development right from birth till adulthood.

Every human has a brain and hence everybody can be considered intelligent in their own way. Parents play an important role in overall development of baby. Human brain starts forming very early (three weeks after conception).

Infancy to Pre-School

A baby’s brain develops rapidly during the first three years of age. Your child’s brain almost triples in weight during the first three years. It has been found that the brain is far more impressionable during early days as compared to maturity. Hence, it is easier to influence a child’s thinking during the early stages. That is why it is said that the kind of environment a child grows up in is very important. Younger children’s brains are more open to learning and influences as compared to older children. Lack of stable and nurturing relationships can affect development of child’s brain.

Children, Teens and Adults

Brain development refers to intellectual, emotional as well as social development in children. During this time, the child starts raising a lot of questions to seek answers. By the time a child reaches seven years of age, he would have developed his own likes, dislikes and strong attitudes. These attitudes can even last a lifetime. He has also reached a stage where he is capable of forming strong friendships.

During the teenage years also, the brain goes through many changes hence we have noticed how the behaviour of an individual begins to change once he enters teenage years. Brain development begins before birth and continues till adulthood. All through life, the brain gathers information and stores memories and skills. It is mainly external stimuli which shape the brain during adulthood.

Understanding Brain Development

When your child begins to crawl, walk, talk, laugh, etc it is a sign of brain development. A baby turning its head and responding to its name are signs of development of the brain. Along with intellectual abilities, social and emotional brain development also takes place. Developing proper social and emotional skills can help your child achieve success in school and life. Physical and motor skills develop in your child from birth till twelve years of age. Language development majorly takes place from birth till ten years of age.

Provide a Nurturing Environment

A nurturing environment is essential for proper development of babies. Simple loving actions such as singing a lullaby, gazing into the little one’s eyes are all essential for enrichment. Proper nutrition and exercise helps in actual physical growth of the brain. Pregnant women should avoid smoking and alcohol and eat healthy so that the foetus’ brain and other body parts develop properly. Negative experiences early on in life can affect brain development. Abuse, neglect and stress can impair development. Touching, holding, comforting, etc all provides positive stimulation to the growing brain. Showering babies with care, love, affection positively aids in baby’s development.

Early Learning and Development

Along with the brain, your child’s emotions also begin to develop. Parents and caregivers should deal patiently with children. Children need to grow up in happy and secure surroundings. Punishing children, laughing at them and ignoring them can make your child shy and less confident. Find positive and effective ways to deal with the situation when children express strong emotions like anger. Praise good behaviour. Speaking and reading to children, telling them stories, singing to them, cuddling them and other such actions stimulate brain growth. Having a close relationship with your baby can offer emotional security and make a big difference. Both parents should make an effort to protect, care and establish a close relationship with the child.

Genes and early childhood experiences play an important role in brain development. A good environment right from the early stages will help in healthy development of the brain. The proper growth and development of a child’s brain lays the foundation for his or her future.
