Unexplained Infertility:Antibodies treatment
2007-11-28
Name: Swati

Hi ,

I have been tested positive for sperm antibodies(1.72) and have been advised to take steroids(Betnelan) for 2 months. Did some reserach and looks like steroids have real bad side effects so a bit scared.

Does anyone have a similar experience? Can you please share you story.

Hi Swati,
What you read must be true, but atleast you know what you have and know that it is a very treatable form of infertility. So, first please try to count your blessings. Now, coming to the side effects of steroids, then..what you have to consider is the following :

1. The steroid use won' t be for long. Only until you get pregnant...which provided everything else goes normal would last for maybe couple of months.

2. During this time, you' d just have to extra careful staying away from the sick etc..Basically be in a pretty sterile env so you don' t get sick easily, since these steroids suppress your immune system and your immune system becomes weak making you more prone to diseases.

3. It is not as scary as it sounds and under the supervision of an able doctor, you should do really well.

4. And honey, at some level we treat even the newly impregnated embryo as a foreign object and that' s why the women' s reaction in terms of nausea, vomiting, morning sickness etc.. So, if you think you cannot cope with these steroids and their side effects, wonder if you are really prepared for getting pregnant.

4. So, take a chill pill. Think positive and be glad that your condition is still treatable. Your condition is not really unexplained, so quit worrying so much about it and go and do the needful to achieve your goals.

IVF via Donor Sperm
Hi, we are planning for ivf via donor sperm as we have genetic history wherein my daughter is ASD and mine own brother is ADHD hence genetic counselor said there is risk of 15-20 percent of child being autistic if we use our own gamet. If male child is born the risk is higher than a girl child.

Hence we thought to go for donor sperm. But there is still... - SS [View Message]
