Nurseries and Schools:Sibling rivalry
2001-10-21
Name: Neena Goel

I am mother of Two, Son (4+) and Daughter(1+).
My son always try to hurt her sister.
He don't have a tendency to hurt anybody . He is not at all aggressicve child. He obeys me a lot and listen to whatever I say.
I tried everything to bring them close but I can not understand why my son thinks her sister as a rival.
My daughter also try to take what my son is having.
But she is too little to understand anything.

Can somebody share there experience and bright ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Neena

My kids 2 1/2 years and 13 months had this prblem for a while. Its very common, with older kids when there is a new one at home. They feel they have lost their privacy and don't like to share.Just give them some time.
Try talking to him and ask him to give it to the younger one instead of you giving. Also ask him whom does mummy and belong to.And tell him that you are a mother to both the kids, the same way all the stuff in the house belongs to everyone in the house and its for evryone's use.Tell him that things in school belongs to every child at school the same way at home too. Also try to pet him and hug him and ask him if he can repeat the same for the younger one and see how things change.Play hide and seek and tell them to find each other.Ask him to teach all he has learnt or know to the younger one, they can spend time that way.Make him teach a song or nursery rhymes etc.Make him feed the younger one.ANd get her clothes, things like that.If I have more ideas I'll let you know

Good luck

Toddlers are at a crucial stage of learning, where foundational skills for life are being developed.
