Hi Ladies,

My baby is one yr old, recently she had a fall due to which her elbow got dislocated . She had a severe pain and unfortunately it was late evening so we cud not take her to doctor..she really suffered badly the entire night. Next day when we tuk her to a pead she said every thing luks fine and Xrays also look fine but since baby was in tears due to pain she asked us to take orthopedics opinion .. who told us that her elbow is dislocated. Now he has asked my baby to take full bed rest but she doesn' t understand the concept of bed rest. What shall I do to make her sit or lie on bed and limit her movements.

The symptoms you are describing seem to point to a very common occurrence known as nursemaid elbow. I have two children and both had this problem (elbow dislocation) when they were 2-3 years old. The paediatrician fixed the problem in 5 seconds in front of our eyes, he just had to pronate the arm to fix the problem. Remember only the paediatrician knows the pronation, do not attempt it on your own, you might make the problem worse.

This problem is extremely easy to fix, but it needs to be done by an experienced Paediatrician only. The doctor just holds the hand in a certain angle and turns it slightly which pops the elbow bone back into the socket. HOWEVER, please note that if it is more than 48 hours since this problem occurred, it is hard to fix it without a small surgery.

You need to call all the paediatricians and check with them if they know how to treat the nursemaid elbow problem. Do not waste time with the doctor if he/she is not aware of the problem, remember if the problem is not treated within 48 hours, then a surgery is needed (as told to me by our paediatrician). If the problem is treated correctly within 48 hours, it can be fixed easily without surgery.
