Diet and Exercise:What mother should eat

Hi Archie
I find in Parents of Babies category that the questions are not answered by u or anybody else. So I am asking my question here...

My wife gave birth to a baby boy and he is 15 days old. I want to know what mother should eat and what not, such that baby gets healthy milk. Our elders say not to give mother - rice, cold foodstuff, cold milk, rajmah, chana, papaya, ladyfinger. She is fond of all these listed things - Can she take these? Will the baby get any difficulty if she takes these items?

Elders tell her to take desi ghee, panjiri with dry fruits, gond ladoos, pulses, and vegetables like ghiya and tori. Is it fine?

Please elaborate us as my wife is having diabetes but is taking Glycomet 500 and her sugar level is controlled. Also tell what should be the sugar level of a baby.

Jayant

Dear Jayant,
You perhaps know that each state in India has slight different practice with diet and components.

My expertise limit to OB/GYN. I know a little about baby stuff and that's from experience only.

I don't think rice is a problem to eat. Many people would want to avoid cold stuff as it can get your wife difficult to shed her weight and likely to suffere from pain in joints earlier than expected, that's later age.

Papaya is not good for her, she can however drink cold water or fruit juice watch out if baby sneezes a lot or suffere from stuffy nose, that's sign and she should stop immediately. The best bet is boil water and cool to room temperature, drink at least two months.

Except Ghee all recommendeded food is great for your wifes future health. Those stuff will help her getting pelvic and waist line stronger and sterdy. She can take ghee but limits should be defined as she can put on weight.

if your wife is breasfeeding then she should not diet, baby gets what she eats.

Numbers of sugar should crawl around 120.

I do not visit many sections and this is due to my knowledge limits. I am however like you an user not a one paid by Indiaparenting.

Good luck
Archie

diet during pregnancy
Maintaining a healthy diet during pregnancy is very important.

During this time, your body needs additional nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

In fact, you may need 350–500 extra calories each day during the second and third trimesters.

A diet lacking in key nutrients may negatively affect the baby’s development.
