Hair Care:Short hair
2014-03-23
Name: Rukmini

I am Rukmini, a 23 year old girl and married about 4 months ago and I now live in Mysore. I am from an orthodox family. So I have never cut my hair and it is about mid back long. My request to my parents to allow to cut it to a bob when I was studying B.Sc. was never allowed. They told me that I could do it after getting married if my husband agreed.

I have opted to stay home and not get employed as desired by my in-laws. My husband is a loving man and I like him a lot. I told him of my desire to wear a bob-cut, something above my collar-bone. He said that I should have either full length hair like now or if I want to have short hair it better be a short boy cut. Anyway, his parents have to agree in the first place.

My fil said that my mil' s word would be the last in these matters. My mil said that she would not object for me to have a boy cut or bob cut or whatever if I first shave off my head fully once in Nanjangud. My husband fully supports my mil' s view. I do not like to shave my head but very keen to have short hair. Has any other married girls of my age faced such a situation? What shall I do?

Subject:  My is bald

As told last month, we all went to nearby Nanjangud on 18th morning. I was eagerly anticipating the head shave so I was happy about it. I along with my parents and in-laws went to the tonsuring place. The barber wetted my hair thoroughly and started shaving off my long hair. My mother and mother-in-law were smiling as they saw my long hair fall off and my bare head started emerging. In just 6 minutes my head was rendered fully bald. I felt it was a joyous experience. I looked at the mirror and I laughed at my own image. It was very good to look at. My mother commented with a broad smile that I really looked good with a bald head.
After bath and darshan we returned to Mysore. In the past one week, a dark tuft has grown and it looks beautiful in its own way. I move around with bare bald head and enjoy it that way. Now I may get this done once in two or three years.
Now I am looking forward to July when I will have my first boy cut.

Hi Rukmini,

CONGRATULATIONS, for following your own wish of getting tonsured completely as scheduled.

Its a nice to have clean shave, especially in this hot summer. No doubt, it was vow and desire of your m-i-l and fully supported by your hubby.

We both, myself and wife too support you for your bold action. Enjoy your tonsure, a dark black tuff on your head would be very spongy and would be looking lovely. I further congratulate you, since, you are moving around in the city with bare head, but, do take care of your head from hot sun shine, which may hamper your health. so please wear cap while travelling, else, move around bare head.

My best wishes to you for your bob/boy cut in july. But, I do not think, you would have that much hair to have boy cut or any other cut, you will have to wait till Diwali this year, to have another cut.

I congratulate your hubby and in-laws for supporting you along with your father, mother in your acts.

BEST LUCK AGAIN and best wishes. Do post your next experience too.

k.girish & sujata

Hi,
This is my experience, you can take your own decision.
Myself Neethu, 25, married.Myself undergone headshave 10 months before. I feel it was a nice experience.I was having issues with hair fall and felt that my hair was not strength enough.
I have done my headahave in Palani and after 3 months, hair had grown somewhat.
It was a nice experience when the barbwr touched my head with the razor and ran it over my head.He had completed once again giving me a smooth gundu.Everybody praised me for new look and nobody teased me as this is a religious act..

After my HS, hair grown better than earlier amd is very thick now.
Now, I visit saloon once in two months and keeping my hair short boycut.

Subject:  Suggessions on boycut

Hi Rukmini,
Suggesting to have a boycut on August.Scissors or clippers that depends up to you.By the time of august ,your hair will be grown to some extent. You can go in Unisex saloons so the saloon guys are expert in diferent types of haircut and can suggest the haircut you want. But it will be costly and if you want cost effective, you can choose barber shop. But in baebershops, there are always men for cutting hair and you should have some courage to hold their eyes on you..

You can choose boycut with 4 inch hair on top and fronts and one inch on back and sidesIf you wish, you can reduce the length on your sides with clipper. You can shave the sidelines and back above your nape with razor.

You will be having a good feel..all the best

Thank you Neethu for sharing your expertence. It will go a long way in making up my mind.
In the last week, a close college friend of mine and my mom - both supported my mother in law´ s view that I should first shave off my hair fully and then I could sport whatever style I want. In fact, my college friend also underwent a Tirupati gundu two months after her marriage as part of a vow her parents had made for her marriage. It had been happily accepted by her in-laws including her husband. She said, like Neethu, that it was one of the nicest experiences she had. She will be growing it long and shaving it off once in four or five years.
My mom said that as per our family traditions she and dad had denied me permission to cut hair. But now that I belong to another family as daughter-in-law, it is my duty to follow as my m-i-l says.
My husband is not relenting on his prescription - long hair or short boycut.
So I have decided to toe my m-i-l´ s wishes - a tonsure at Nanjangud on 18th April (a day after elections in K´ tka). I do not want to go to polling booth a baldy and risk being not recognised against my photo ID card.

May be, like Neethu, I will have my first boy cut in July or August.

By the way, Neethu, how short do you get your boy cut? And is it with scissors or clippers? My husband says that he will get me clipper cut. I do not know what it means.
