Due Date Club November 2003:My GD Test Experience!!
2003-08-11
Name: Suma

Hi! I had my 1 hour GD test on last friday. My appt. was at 1:20 PM. Since the time of the test is right after my lunch time, I asked the doctor about the food intake and she told me that I SHOULD EAT NORMALLY AS EVERYDAY. So, I had a heavy lunch at 12PM and went to the test. I also had good breakfast and basically i ate everything i usually eat on a regular day.

I went there and the nurse gave me 50g sugar solution. After one hour, they tested me by poking blood from my finger and tested with the Glucose testing machine and immediately she told me the level is 150. Level should be below 140 to pass the test. So, I failed the test and the nurse filled forms for 3 hour test and told me to go for the test as soon as possible. Since this appt. was on friday, I went for the 3 hour test on monday. I ate everything i usually do for those 2 days(sat and sun). This friday I called my nurse and asked her about the results and she told me the good news that I PASSED the test. My glucose levels are completely NORMAL.

According to my knowledge(since I am not a doctor) , My input for whoever is going to take the test is, don't worry about the diet on the day of the test. I gave mine right after my lunch. And my thinking was I should know the correct Glucose levels that I will be having everyday. So, why change diet for a single day?
And remember it is better to be detected and take precautions if u r Diabetic rather than going UNDETECTED. And take this test as any other test like AFP, U/S etc;

Diabetes has nothing to do with ur diet. It shows how ur pancreas is producing INSULIN. Eating sweets(normal qty) doesn't make u diabetic but if u r diabetic then u should control ur intake of sweets. And also I read in a book about this GD. One of the reason Women are prone to this GD is because during pregnancy some women produce more pregnancy hormones(called HLT) than other women. These HLT hormones has a tendency to SUPRESS INSULIN.
So, girls, Don't blame ur diet or anything if u have GD.

I hope the info helps!!

Hi Suma,
Great relief that you cleared the test.Mine is scheduled with Simmi on 25th August.Mine is a 3 hr test directly and have been asked by doctor to fast from 12 midnight, so guess will do as the doc said. Anyway will go with a positive attitude and that should help.
Take care

Hi Suma
This is Nick from Oct board.Congrats on passing the test.

U are right that diet should not affect it.But as regards fasting different doctors have different opinion.This is what I found on the net \";
Most doctors usually do not have you fast before the one-hour test. However, doctors differ in their exact recommendations. Some will tell you to eat breakfast or lunch before coming in, but to let at least 2 hours or so pass before taking the test (in other words, you don't want to be processing the carbohydrates from your breakfast at the same time you are processing the 50g of sugar). This is probably the most sensible course, but there are providers who tell you that it makes no difference whether or not you eat just before the test. There is no agreement on whether to fast before the test, with some sources claiming it makes the test more accurate (ACOG 1994) and others disagreeing. Several studies have noted that eating 2 or more hours beforehand is helpful, especially in populations at higher risk for gd, but these assertions are by no means conclusive (see Greene editorial, New England Journal of Medicine, 1997; Cetin and Cetin, International Journal of Gynaecology & Obstetrics, 1997; Lewis et al., Diabetes Care 1993; Sermer et al., American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1994). The best course seems to be to eat normally, and then take the test 2 hours or so after your meal. Try to avoid lots of refined sugars and such around the day of the test (though of course you should be avoiding those anyhow!).\";

During the glucose test after they give us the glucose drink or any sweetened liquid the body absorbs the glucose rapidly,causing blood sugar levels to rise within 30-60 mins.When they draw the blood during this 1 hour the reading shows how the glucose solution was metabolized (processed by the body). If these results are high then u know we all go for 3 hour one.

And since u mentioned that diet does not affect GD results then I think controlling ur diet or not cannot make GD UNDETECTED if GD present.How your body metabolizes the glucose solution is sufficient to indicate the results.

Hope this helps.

Congrats Suma on passing the test. You must be relieved after going through the 3 hr deal.

Thanks for the info, it is very helpful.

I've been having sugar cravings for a few days (I haven't had any until now) and so I've been indulging myself a little bit more than I usually do.

I've decided not to let the impending test get the best of my cravings... :)

Congrats again.
