Crying & Colic:reflux, and weight gain

Name: PRITI SALKADE

My son is 4 and half months. He vomits a lot, at times the whole feed. Our Ped says he has reflux and has suggested barium swallow test. We are not sure, whether it will help? He has gain only 1 kg. in last 2 months. I am worried.

Hi Priti, dont worry, every child who vomits will not be suspected with reflux problem, even my son was vomitting from birth to 6 months, its quite normal, my doctor also advised me for Barium test and also scan, but i didnt do the test, the vomitting stopped when he completed 6 months, for few babies vomitting will be up to 5 - 6 months and gradually it will stop. but my son was gaining weight, as ur son is not gaining weight, there is something u need to do, take him to some other Ped, and take second opinion and if that Ped also suggests for Barium then go ahead.

Good Luck.

DEAR PRITI I AGREE WITH REIMISHA PLEASE GO AHEAD WITH TEST .
IAM MOTHER OF THREE AND HALF YEAR OLD GIRL CHILD AND SHE FROM THE AGE OF 1 AND HALF TILL NOW HAVING REFLUX. SHE IS ON MEDICATION FROM LAST ONE YEAR AND HER VOMITS R CONTROLLED.
DOCTOR TOLD US THAT SHE SHOULD SLEEP RAISING HER HEAD , SHE SHOULD NOT SLEEP IMMEDIATELY AFTER FOOD, SHOULD GO TO BED ATLEAST AFTER THREE HOURS OF HAVING FOOD. GIVE HER THICKENED FEED.AND SMALLER FREQUENT MEALS.AND MEDICINES AFCOURSE .
AND EVERYTHING WILL BE OK BY GROWING AGE.

Hi Priti,

I hv a 6 mnth old daughter. She did not hv any problem wid hvng her feeds. Mostly bottle fed. However, last wk she threw up a couple of times, which had lilttle streaks of blood. As all her reports were normal, the doc advised a barium test and the results showed significant GER. (gastro easophegal reflux). Now she is on medication. Other advice includes giving her thickened feeds, propping up after feeds and gvng smaller feeds. All of this would help. Don' t worry. If ur doc advices u barium test also called Milk Scan, go it. It will put ur mind at ease.
