Nurseries and Schools:What are your kids being taught in UKG?
2013-08-12
Name: neha deshmukh

My son (will be 5 in sept.) is being taught cursive writing, hindi alphabet writing, reading simple sentences and writing 5-6 letter words in writing from memory. I feel this is a lot to expect from a child.

The teacher, also just writes the words on the board, which the children then practice at home. When I asked the teacher to make kids write in class as well, she refused saying she doesn' t have time. So that means all the writing part comes home and my son usually forgets how madam had written words in class.

One more thing, he is expected to write in cursive, which has been introduced this year. He does not fully understand (or rather remember) the cursive letters yet.

I want to know from other parents what their children are being taught in school and whether I should insist on the children writing at least ones what the teacher is showing them in school.

Just complaint this to the principal and make sure that next when you ask anything you get a proper answer and also make a complaint of that the children are really not learning properly.

Hello dear this is very normal please do not panic as nowadays this is the new trend of making children learn fast and no need to worry as this will continue next year also so if your son is unable to understand by the next year he will be able to do so.

Hi neha please share us the name of the school we will highlight this issue as this is not right as you have the right to question and the way the teachers are teaching it seems they are not bother if the children are learning or not.

Hi neha this is something new to me as my daughter is also of the same age and here in Mumbai the school teachers are very good and are going very slow and make sure that every child is learning properly and proper guidance is given to us.

cursive writing is expecting too much from the child. 5 year old kid just come to know how to write so bombarding so much things at the same time is too much but i think in most of the eng medium schools cursive only being taught from the beginning. so i don't think so it is very bad.

You should request the teacher to give it in writing so that the child can practice at home. Otherwise you can ask her for a book on this. I feel the teacher will be able to understand your concerns. Or she can help the child practice in school by helping him write the letters with her. this way he will be able to remember the letters.

I completely understand yr problem. I am a parent of a 5 yr old and same is happening with my kid. ?I tried to complain many times but the teacher would not listen. Gradually she used to single out my kid and punish him. I had no option left but to get him admitted to another school. Now I dare not to complain.

I feel you didn´ t do the right thing. you should have complained to the Principal or other higher authorities. This is not the right way to do. Teachers are for imparting education. Kids go to school to learn and parents merely help them imbibe what is learnt in school. So I feel you should not have taken this matter lightly.
