What do you think about social networking sites? Do you or your child use any of them? Do you know any stories of abuse of such sites?

I don' t see the harm. Parents can use a keyboard logger software to keep a track of keystrokes. This will let you know what your child is up to behind your back and on the comp. Be warned you might be surprised about the results.

We need to invest in spywares and other softwares to keep parental controls in TV cables and while using internet when we have kids.
How muchever the world progresses we need to keep social networking with our friends and family always. Kids will also learn and cherish this in future. Networking thru internet attracts kids when they know for sure that they r not required to behave their best. They know they can write anything, reply anything since their identity is hidden. Its like a passport to interact with anyone , anyhow. They are likely to get attracted towards all this only when they r unhappy or do not have anyone intresting to interact within family or friends.
So i feel we need to make that extra effort to show our kids what real friendship is, how we can take/give help within relatives etc... and that netorking we seek when we are out of reach with that person etc...

The problem is that children nowadays know so much more that it is easy for them to hide their online life from their parents.

I dont quite agree with what you say. I work from home and am usually on the computer. But my teenage son and daughter are normal in theor computer/ interenet usage. We hardly have to monitor them, though the computer is in the living room, so there´ s often someone around when they are using it.

While parents may monitor online sessions of their children, what we tend to often disregard is that there are other factors that have an even greater bearing on whether children enjoy a wholesome online experience or not.

Parents who sepnd all their time engorssed in a zombie-like state hooked on to the computer screen, what influence are they offering to their children. It is necessary that parents lead by example, balancing the real and online worlds in which they choose to operate.

That was a good article on the issue of children and networking sites.

I can understand adults who re into networking for various reasons - lack of time to physically visit freiends etc, but even as a cure for loneliness. But isn' t it abberant behaviour for children to seek internet friends instead of cultivating healthy realtionships with real people in flesh and blood? Isn' t there somehting inherently unnatural in the fact that the coming generations will grow up increasingly plugged into a virtual world, but disconnected from reality?

I think that the Indian society at large is suffering from some sort of myopic paradigm. Its because of this kids aren´ t able to express themselves they feel cooped up and hence need to resort to online groups

The issue specifically was - do kids need online networking? How many kids do you you know who need to contact people from an earlier school ...or collect old movie posters. A hobby group (even if online) is a different matter all together. Here we are talking about kids who shun normal occassions for interaction and instead escape into a virtual world of illusion with countless ´ avatars´ and profiles, losing touch with reality and often endangering their lives.

The future is connectivity, whether you like it or not. Your phone, TV, video, audio, Ipod, web are all going to converge into a single device that allows you to connect with other people. Each individual will automatically have a profile. And he will have the option of finding others and interacting with them. This is the future.

Of course, social networking sites are useful. Tried contacting somebody you knew from school but haven´ t met for the last 10 years. Try searching a social networking site? Have a weird hobby such as collecting old movie posters? You are likely to find people of your kind on these sites...Of course, that also means that all weirdos and psychotic people also connect to commit dastardly acts.
