Waiting to try:Unprotected sex...need help and clarification

Name: Rak S

Hi people -

Need some help and advise from you. I am to be married soon and would like to know the safe period where one can have unprotected sx

My fiance has regular 30 day periods, lasting for about 4 days. Now as I understand 1 week prior to mens and 1 week after mens is a safe time to have unprotected sx (no condoms, nothing) with limited chances of getting pregnant. Is this true?

Also given that sperms can survive almost 3-4 days is the true safe period 7 days or 3 days only after the mens are done?

In which case it may be advisable to during this period to use spermicides etc.. Are these OTC? Where can one buy these products in Bombay?

Would appreciate your inputs?

Dear Rak,

Althoug last week of cycle is safe for not getting pregnant, delayed ovulation could pose some risk.

Ovulation can be advanced or delayed. Therefore your best bet is to put her on BCP or wear condom. I would recommend second as it would allow you ttc the day you choose to. On the other hand if she is chosen to take BCP she will take a few cycles to get normal before getting pregnant.

Good luck

Dear Rak,

It's very difficult to say anything as it's individual and cycles are known to vary widely in same girl.

It's OK to bed in first five -six days if she has cycle of 29 days. But remember she may be bleeding and if you love her don't want to do this. It's not very pleasant time for a girl. She is emotional also during menses and just before menses.

If she has cycle of 29 days then from day 20th you could have sex, but if she has delayed ovulation she can get pregnant.

There is nothing wrong in choosing best birth control. If you live in US then ask your Dr. to prescribe her some patch or pill. At the same time don't ignore that one day you want to be parents. Again Condom is what I suggest.
