hi iam an indian mother residing in the united states.my kid was born here and is completely used to the life here.here kids address their parents,friends older people by first names.now my daughter used to call me 'mummmy'. she's s started calling me 'radha' my name.when i asked her she replied that other kids also do the same thing.here even her friends call me by my name.she calls all my relatives here by first names only.its very common here.what do i do?i dont mind being called by my name.but its tough adjusting to western culture.do i force my daughter because she has told me she believes in first name usage only.thank you Neena replied. I would like to say I have lived here in the U.S. my entire life, and so have my parents. Even though you are here raising your family in a different society in which you were raised doesn't mean you have to compromise your values.

Gently, but seriously insist your child call you Mommy. That is the only acceptable name to be called by your children.

As far as other children, when they call you by your name, answer with \";Please call me Mrs. ___\";.

I strongly feel a child should be reminded to have certain respects for their elders.

Take care sandra schuler replied. I would have to disagree with adapting to the western culture when it comes to your eleifs.. I am an american born and raised in the western culture and I would not ever give my children that choice. I have earned the respectful name of Mommy and my family has earned Aunt --- , Uncle---, Grandma, Grandpa ect. And my freinds and athers in any elder fashion deserve the respect of Mr/Mrs and there first or last name. I am telling you this because even though I have always lived in the Western culture, There are still my values and lifestyle that I will never give up due to what others choose to do..
