Due Date Club October 2003:Breast Milk

Hi All
Is there anything specific we can take in our diet which can be good for our breast milk production? Can we know now that whether I am going to produce sufficient milk for my baby or not? I tried to find it out and came acroos this information -
Vitamin B12 needs are higher in pregnancy due to vitamin B12's role in tissue synthesis. If you are planning to breast feed, you will also need to make sure that you have enough vitamin B12 stored so that your milk vitamin B12 will be high enough to meet the infant's needs. One brand of yeast, Red Star T6635+ has been tested and shown to contain active vitamin B12. This brand of yeast is a reliable source of vitamin B12. The RDA for pregnancy for vitamin B12 is 2.2 micrograms daily. A rounded teaspoon of yeast powder or 2 teaspoons of mini-flake yeast or 2-1/2 tablespoons of large-flake yeast provides 2.2 micrograms of vitamin B12. Of course, since vitamin B12 is stored, you could consume larger amounts of nutritional yeast less often. Another alternative source of vitamin B12 is fortified cereal. Nutri-Grain cereal contains vitamin B12 at this time. 2.2 micrograms of vitamin B12 are provided by 1.5 ounces (about one cup) of wheat Nutri-Grain. Check the label of your favorite cereal because manufacturers have been known to stop adding vitamin B12. Other sources of vitamin B12 are fortified soy milk (check the label as this is rarely available in the US), vitamin 12 fortified meat analogues (food made from wheat gluten or soybeans to resemble meat, poultry or fish), and vitamin B12 supplements.

hai,
u can include jeera and garlic in ur diet to increase the supply of milk. But I believe that has to be done after the delivery. There r breastfeeding classes which you can enroll along with ur lamaze classes. They teach u how to stimulate ur breasts in the 8th or 9th mth and prepare it for feeding. My friends and cousins have told me that breastfeeding classes r important than lamaze, so I enrolled for both.Once I start going for the classes,I will share some tips that is taught in the classes.

Hi Manisha,

This is for your information.
During my last visit I asked my doc till when that I should take prenatal vitamins. She said I will have to take during whole period of pregancy and even after that if we plan to breast feed the baby. She asked me to continue these till I stop breast feeding.

Anu.

Subject:  Advices i came across

Hi...
Thanks for the info..was searching for breastfeeding diet for my friend who recently delivered...from indian sites have seen advices to use jeera, fenugreek (fenugreek seen many sites advicing to include in diet), saunf.Other advices from experienced parents i have heard are eating sabudana kheer, lauki..Fish is supposed to be good but certain types of fish. if u search for indian lactation dietin any search engine..u will come across many tips online.
Seeing my friend thru her first month of breastfeeding, thats a whole new experience we will have to learn and adjust to in ways of diet, holding baby , time of feedings, types of problems we may come across and dealing with soreness, pain with thejoy of being a mom too..hopefully by then we have moms/in laws to help out..if not there is always a lactation specialist in the hospital who wll visit us to help us thru the first few sessions of breastfeeding.
