Breastfeeding:Breastfeeding..Other elementary questions

My baby is gonna be one week old tomorrow. Hes been having loadsa milk everyday ( or atleast it seems so considering the amount of time he spends at my wife's breasts ). I have read about non-nutritive sucking wherein the baby just sucks the nipple but doesnt really drink any milk. I dont think thats the case since I do see him swallowing from time to time. Last two days, he has been drinking (or atleast sucking) every 1- 1/2 hrs. He has been urinating quite often. In the last 24 hours, he passed stools about 6 times ( the last 3-4 looked like loosies ). However, I read that babies fed with breast milk usually have motions of the \";loose\"; kind. Just wanted to know the thin line between healthy and diaorrhea-like frequency.

I dont really suspect anything wrong with him but just wanted to know whats going on..whats normal and whats not. When shud i be heading to a doc and when can i comfort myself and my wife?

Hes been totally cranky last two days and he calms himself down only when put to the nipple ( again, not sure if he is drinking milk or just sucking ). He usually falls asleep while drinking milk. And when I try to put him in the \";burping\"; position, he wakes up. Very sensitive.....

Any tips????

Hi Sunil

Breastfed babies at this stage would have seedy stool ( curd like ) along with some yellow sticky paste. These curds are undigested part of milk, normal at this stage. Your baby will continue to pass this many 5-6 stools for about another 3 months.
after that his stool will be sticky with no curd like seed..ie. he would be able to digest all the milk and pass stool once a day sometimes once afetr 2-3 days, which is agin very normal but this will be after 3 months, not now.
Though its difficult to tell mild diarrhea which is very common and get cured itself, you should not ignore diarrhea.
If you see a little stool followed with YELLOW WATER RUNNING down then its definitely dirrehea. whenever you see this give him pedialytes (in India its ORS) 1-2 ounce about 5-6 time in 24 hrs.

Also at this stage baby start becoming very cranky due to reasons unkown.
But gas is one of the culprit, so give him gripe water every 4-5 hours. in nights also.
Its okay if he wakes up while burping...all babies do. If you find he is crying cz of gas pain you can give him Mylicon drops .Rock him slowly and he will fall asleep again. You can keep light very very dim so just to see around. You can also have some white noise on. Talking may disturb him.

Let him spend time on breast as babies do this for comfort and to console themeselves as they cant do anything else .
Things wil be ok aftre 2-3 months.

His stomach is adjusting to food through mouth , so stool is normal and so the time he spends at the breast is normal and very good for him. Encourage this and help your wife doing this as she will need lots and lots of rest after feeding. She will need fluids/juices/milk and some sweets also while she is breastfeeding.

After 2.5 months your baby will adapt and mother and child both will learn breastfeeding and he will feed every 2 to 3 hrs and would sleep during the nights.

Good luck

RE:Adult breast feeding
I was not breastfeed in my childhood hence the idea of sucking and feeding from a woman's full, engorged breasts has infatuated me. It is a fantasy that drives me wild like nothing else, just the thought of laying my head in a woman's lap while she brings her swollen nipples to my mouth.
