Nurseries and Schools:Writing Skills

My 4 yr old son stepping in Jr. K.G. is simply disinterested in writing- even to scribble with crayons. Otherwise an active and smart child, he simply refuses to draw simple lines and dots forget about colouring. We have given him ample encouragement & motivation to write but all our efforts are futile. I would be grateful if someone can suggest an remedy which will trigger his interest in writing.

Hi Prithi, I can understand your plight. Writing is not an easy skill, you will need to prepare the ground well in advance of these abilities. Try getting him to do finger painting, let him enjoy playing with the mushy paint and slowly guide him to draw patterns, scribble and then go on to alphabets if he is ready. You can also join him and show him how you can finger paint. As writing involves a lot of finger muscles, exercising his fine motor skills by playing dough, cutting paper with a pair of scissors, tearing pieces of paper into strips are good exercises. Montessori method of teaching is very good as it teaches many such practical exercises which help children develop such skills. If you do not want to enrol him in a Montessori preschool then get a book on Montessori which shows you how to do such simple but yet very practical exercises at the comfort of your home. Hope this helps, do write to me if you need more info. on the Montessori exercises. Happy Parenting!

Hi Santhi,
Thanx a ton for ur prompt response. I have been using the occupational therapies as suggested by u for the last 3-4 months. Though there is a good amount of progress, it is slow as my son is highly uninterested with it. Using scissors, playing with clay & sand, finger painting, puzzles do not fascinate him. However he enjoyed going 2 his nursery school which adopted these play way method. I was also told that there r occupatinal therapist who help these kind of children who do not hold pencil & write or draw. Are u aware of this? Kindly help!!!

RE:What Toddlers Should Be Learning?
Toddlers are at a crucial stage of learning, where foundational skills for life are being developed. At Skillmatics, we believe toddlers should be learning cognitive abilities like problem-solving, memory building, and recognition of shapes, colors, and patterns. Language development, motor skills, and social-emotional growth are equally important during these years.
