Hi All,

I am really confused on whether ultrasounds are good or bad or rather do they affect the baby ?

The docs always advise on a U/S for any possible problem and elders and family always keep saying that too many Ultrasounds are not good !!

What is the actual advisable no. of ultrasounds that one should get done during the complete 9 month term and at what intervals ? and any medical reasons related to no getting it done....if anyone knows....please share....

ultrasounds are completely safe. they can detect so many problems. I myself have had 8 ultrasounds uptill now!! here the gynacs do u/s every visit that is first trimister every 2 weeks, second trimister every 4 weeks and last tri again every 2 weeks. Every country/hospital/doctor has different trends.
do not worry. have a safe pregnancy..

Here in India mostly they do normal scan 1st one at 12th wk (ie 3 months,and 2nd at 20th wk (ie 5 months) then 3rd at 7months,and then 4th one - if required to know the final position of baby around after 8 months or during delivery time! So these 3-4 scans are done during whole pregnancy time.It is very important to know the baby' s growth inside.Nothing to worry if more scans are done...as doctors may suggest for more scans for some emergency/any other issues. vidhi replied. hi suni ,
hi dear r u in india right now b' coz i know in laws always say tht its not good to hv u/s but belive me in USA some drs do u/s everymonth n thr is no possible side effects of it ...i m right now in USA but i hv gone through only four u/s n u wont belive to my suprise in my 7th mth the dr didnt even have a u/s for me ..after the eight mth they hv regular u/s i guess...but 4-5 is ok ...first in 6th week ...2nd in 3rd or 4th mth ...3rd u/s in 6th mth n... 4th u/s in 7th or 8th mth ..like that reshmi replied. suni i tink its okk to go for u/s.iam in my 7th month and already 4 u/s are over for me. my first one was done in my 6th or 7th week to rule out ectopic pregnancy.then 10 days later us was repeated since in my 7th week us there was no heart beat//heart seen.3rd us was done on 4th month normal one-routine chk-up.
finally last one was done on may beginning.this was due to emergency.my fetal movements were lesser.so doc told me to do it(also heart beat was slow).now on my 7th month i:ll be having another to chk babys weight and all that.so u see it depends on the conditions.but generrally it is 3 -5.
the doc assured me us dont harm babies.its some sort of sound waves that is passed to the uterus region to find out action,movt,any defects for foetus ,placenta problems or pelvic problems for women.
no there is no harm to foetus or you.in doha ,where i stay i tink us is compulsory coz they hav to find out fetal movts,baby position and abnormality for baby.its impt as it can rule out any defect for u or the baby.iam no expert on the subject ,but all i know its harmless.
