Name: Concerned Mom

Hi,
I'm a regular visitor to this site. I have a huge concern regarding my 18 month old. Yesterday, I took him to his Dr for the well check up. The Dr was very concerned abt his weight, he only weighs around 21lbs and 9 oz. She has asked me to meet a dietician for him. I can't give him any dairy products, since he's allergic to them. So no fat:( He's on the 5th percentile in the weight chart and that concerned his Dr a lot. Can you ladies throw some light on this and let me know how much does your babies weigh at this age and if I have to really be concerned abt his weight. Thanks in advance!

Don't think u should worry. Its funny ur doc thinks u should worry..all my friends kids are around 21-23 pounds during this time..anushka is also 21+ or 22 pounds..don't think we should worry if they are active and alert.
I would just ignore and go with ur gut instincts..we are generally smaller than american folks so unless they are comparing to them..we will always be small. I don't think u should worr..if he continues to make u beleive he is small i would change docs if other kids doc say wt is fine.
is fat always diary..u made me think..doesn't fried stuff and sugar count as calories too..think this is the only age kids can eat fried, sweet stuff..before long all will be weight conscious if their moms aren't :) isn't it.?

Radhika....generally Doctors use 2 different charts, one for baby boys and another for baby girls. If a girl baby is weighing 22 lbs around the 18th month, then she's on the 23rd percentile. Whereas,if a boy baby is weighing the same at the same age, then he's on the 5th percentile. Since my son is in the 5th percentile, is what bothered my Doctor. Also, abt the fat...Dairy is much more fat than the fried stuff and the sugar that you mention. Cheese,Yogurt,Butter,Milk has more fatty stuff than eating a fried potato. I agree that anything fried will have fat, But do you agree that it has the same fat content as that of the dairy products that I mentioned above? Anyways, I hope to take my son to the dietician this week and try to solve this weight issue. :)

Hi,

Iam also sailing in the same boat.My daughter is only 21 lbs and 4 oz.I don't know why my doc didn't worry like urs when i went last week for the 18th month check up.He said that some kids will put weight arround 2 years. So not to worry. After reading ur posting iam worried because my daughter is more worse than ur son.The doc said that as she is active the whole time its difficult to gain weight. If u consult a dietician he will give more tips ur son will put on weight.Don't worry.

love from
kals

Hi Kalyani...Thanks for the quick reply. Didn't mean to scare any moms here. Seriously, sometimes I really wonder do the Drs here in US just scare u for nothing. My son is a very very active toddler and seriously until the check up, I didn't really worry abt his weight since his dad is on the leaner side.Anyways, will try to get an appt from the dietician. Thx again!
