Hi Archi and Dec Moms,

Hope all Dec mom's and the babies are doing fine.
I just finished my 2nd ultrasound and i completed 18 weeks.Baby is doing fine.
I was told that there won't be any more Ultrasounds...
how many times are these scans done during the 9 months?what is the normal practice?

Hi Chaitra,

Are you in India? If so, then its quite possible that you may not have many ultrasounds after week 18th. Probably one around week 24. I have heard that during the course of pregnancy they do it about 3 times. I think you will surely have at least another ultrasound.

Best,
Raji

Chaitra,
ultrasound frequency is purely depends on the insurance patient carry and the practice OB believes in.
Academy of OB/GYn recommend to have three ultrasound through out the pregnancy, one in each trimester.
First trimester for estimating correct due date, knowing status of pregnancy, heart beat and demonstrating any worries.
Second trimester is big one and often called Anamoly scan.
Third trimester between week 34 and week 37. To re-estimate gestation age, estimate birth weight, most importantly to know about Placenta situation.

One can otherwise have as many ultrasound as they wish provided your OB recommeds them and situation demands there by insurance may allow to go ahead. Otherwise some ends up only having one or two ulrasound and the third trimester is dispensable.

You should not push your OB for an ultrasound as I know if there is any concern s/he will send you for an ultrasound.

There isn't anything like Normal and Abnormal practice, it's just these things depend on insurance and patient situation.

Archie

Thanks Raji, Monisha and Archi..

Am in Finland and i was told by govt rule its only 2 scans through out pregnancy.

Yeah as archi say i was told that if the nurse suspects something she will suggest for scan..else they won't do it..

Will check with my doc in my next doc's visit.

Thanks for all the replies

Very good doctor
Hi,

I delived a baby boy in March 2009. I consulted Dr.Chitra Ramamurthy during my pregnancy cycle. She' s one of the best doctors in Bangalore. Not many people know about her. She handled the entire process in a very professional manner. I used to visit her clinic in Jayanagar 3rd block. She is very caring and affable. She says what to do and what not to do. ... - Sandhya Rao [View Message]

So long as your baby is feeding, that' s all that really matters. These days, formulas are packed with everything the baby needs, and although it is never as good as breast milk, it' s perfectly fine. It sounds like maybe what you are missing is the bonding that breast feeding provides? My first child had both breast and bottle milk for the first 6 months, when I had a mis... - Jhumri [View Message]
