What does your child like to gift people? Has he ever been disappointed with a gift? Do you enjoy birthday parties? What do you think is the best part about gifts?

How about gifting some of yourself - your time or your love. concern etc?

Afterall, atleast many of us can buy most of waht we want. It is the thought of a person whom we love, whose love we are happy to recieve, that makes it great to recieve a gift.

I enjoy gifting too. In fact what I find most troublesome is the choosing part! often people dont say it but you can see the disappointment on their faces. i believe utile gifts are better than pretty ones which are of no use.

No one will admit but the truth is people only like receiving gifts. WHo likes spending money for someone else' s happiness?! We are a selfish lot. Often gifting is nothing but give and take of same value.

Big mouth, speak for yourself. I have always enjoyed the process of buying gifts for loved ones. Besides, gifts need not be for a special occassion and certainly don´ t need to be expensive.

Hi everybody! I enjoyed reading the article. I have another idea for a gift - a pet. I think it' s the best option ever. Kids love getting puppies, kittens, fish or parrots as gifts. Of course, ensure that they have the resources to support a pet.

giving a pet is not a good option at all. once the excitement cools, the smae pet may be propmptly abandoned or neglected. Also, parents do not necessarily match the enthusiasm of children.

that´ s a nice idea. but one will have to be very careful to ensure that the parents don´ t have a problem with it.

Great article! I like the idea of gifting:

\" you may wish to inculcate a new hobby in your child by gifting him modelling clay or an embroidery kit.\"
-------------

One thing I don' t understand is why are gifts opened infront of the guests (does this happen only in the US or in India, too?) Why can' t the gifts be unwrapped when all the guests are gone? That way people who are not able to afford expensive gifts are not embarrassed.

I don' t know, maybe somebody can enlighten me about this.

Thanks,
Aisha

I have an idea - I have a very curious and impatient daughter who can never wait until all the guests are gone. What I do is, I allow her to open one of the gifts in another room and I forbid her to talk about it. This keeps her satisfied at least for a little time.

I agree with Aisha. Gifts should not be opened in front of guests. But it´ s not an absolute. If it is a small party of very close friends, they would like to see the happiness on the birthday kid´ s face on opening the gifts. Like when it was my child´ s best friends party, he actually stayed back to help his friend unwrap the gifts. But yes, in a large party, it is not correct to start opening then and there. The child may make some undesirable remark.
