Breastfeeding:Travel to India

Dear friends,

I am planning to travel to India with my 3 1/2 old baby from Chicago. I have the following concerns:

- I am breast feeding my baby but mainly pump and feed my baby using the medela double ease pump. Does anyone know of issues using this pump with adapter in India.

- How do I plan my trip, I am planning to stay there for 2 months. Should I take 2 types of formula with me - incase my milk supply decreases (which is not great now), should I pack some Gerber rice cereal. I'm not sure what will or will not suit my baby.

- Can the 4th month shots be given in India. I will be Hyderabad.

- How can I give formula in the flight - will I get some warm water ? Also is it possible to pump in the airport ?

- Does my baby need the SSN number to travel back. She still does not have it.

Sorry for the long message. Apprecaite your help as I am very concerned. Thanks a lot.

1) You get formula's there in India....but make sure that the formula you will be using for your baby in India will be something that you will use after coming back to US. So that she gets used to the taste.

2)Sure, you can take the Geber cereal with you. But just so you know, we do get rice cereal there.

3) Abt the shots, please check with your doctor. I think the Dr will be the best to advise you here on this one.

4) On Formula, you can take the READY TO FEED formula that is available in the market. I took it with me when i traveled with my baby and It was so helpful. You also do get 4 0z bottles too.

5) SSN number is not needed now for travel. All that she will need is passport and a Visa.

I hope this helps. Have a great time!

Hi Diya,

I don't know much abt the adapter thing, but yes .. u can get Similac in india (if that helps and u dont' have to carry formula from here).

2ndly abt giving formula in flt, I carried a small thermos of hot water, and a bottle of plain water with me, this way I never had to look for water during the flight. (Thermos water was hot for like 12 hrs, then later it was warm and I didn't mix any plain water).

When re u travelling, ur baby is 31/2 months old, talk to ur Ped abt it, for my baby her 7th month shot we came back and gave her when she was 8 1/2 months old.

SSN don't know abt that, but I don't think so, they don't look for that all they see at the airport is Passport(but again, its good to check once again).

HTH and all the best for ur trip.

Ekta

I was not breastfeed in my childhood hence the idea of sucking and feeding from a woman's full, engorged breasts has infatuated me.
