Due Date Club December 2002:Hire a doula

Name: me

Hello,
I recently read an intresting article about doulas. Studies show that her presence reduces the use of epidurals by 60% & cuts the chances of a c-sect in half. So am trying to find more info about doula.
is anyone of u considering a doula. also if any 2nd time moms have already used a doula in previous pregnancy please let me if you found her helpful.
take care

Check your hospital website for more info on how to hire, rates, doula service etc.Your hospital may have diff.rates etc.BTW, where are u based in US ?

I don't think doctor's permission is required for this purpose. But do discuss this with your doc.Take his/her opinion aswell.

One drawback of hiring a doula thru hospital is that u won't get to meet your doula beforehand since u wouldn't know who is going to be your doula whereas if you hire privately, u can meet the person and have discussion on your birthplan.Am not sure if this is a major drawback becos we do submit birthplan to the hospital and every pregnancy book tells us to carry copy of our birthplan in our hospital bag , so this issue may/may not matter much.

hey Kavitha found this web site for doulas its www(dot)dona(dot)org
i just found it so still have to check it out my self.
i live in NJ..what about you
you r right about the birth plan issue...i also think it should not matter much. & maybe in a way if u hier a doula from that hospital itself she also will be very used to that perticular hospitals rules & regs.
take care

Well, we too have read very good reports about doula. My husband wants to hire a doula thru hospital but i've not made up my mind on it yet.I do feel it could be a good idea to hire since the cost is only 50/-if u are hiring thru hospital(otherwise it could be 200+/- or even 300+/-) and also doula could be of great help in case of prolonged labour in which case our coach too might get tired.Question is how comfortable we would feel in her presence, well my hubby thinks if at any point we don't feel the need of her or we don't feel comfortable with her we can say so.He feels its worth trying.Try to get more info from your lamaze classes and other participating couples.Do let me know if u hear good feedback.I would do the same.

Hi Sheel,
You can drink water but after one day of your delivery and it would be said by doctors also. You have to take care at that moment because after delivery of baby you would have lot of pain.... - Roja [View Message]

Hi Sheel,
Why do you think in such way doctors would take care of you also.So it is better you do not take any tensions for that which would be better for you only.I hope you would do that.... - Megha [View Message]

Hi Sheel,
You can take water there would not be any problem also. And it would be better you do normal instead of operation.Even you can walk freely by evening if it is normal.... - Mala [View Message]
