Speech:My daughter is not speaking..

Hello, My daughter is 2 years old. She hasn' t started speaking yet. She is
quite acitve and playing with all kinds of toys and eating well. If she
needs something, she' s showing all kinds of gestures like if she wants to
eat, she took us to near to the dining table and make us to sit. Also she
is trying to eat of her own. She is trying to drink milk, juices in the
cups, playing with water and enjoying while bathing, etc. Also she wants
to go outside, etc. She hears nursery rhymes in TV, watchin advertisements
etc. She is smiling whenever she likes and crying if she doenst like it.
If we say chocolate, she will come along with us, but if we call with her
name, she turns up rarely. Some times she is afraid of some big articles
like big toys or standing in some high chairs, etc. Whenver we are trying
to teach some words to her, she is not attentive. Sometimes she used to
clap her hands if we say and if we tell to say bye bye she waves her
hands, but not always. If we try to teach her mama , appa , etc, she is
not even trying to say these words. But she use to say these words without
recogoizing us. I mean she wont call me appa , but used to say appa of
her own. Also she use to say some words of her own always like baabaa ,
haaa , titi etc and if we show some pictures in some books she is very
keen to watch that. I would like to know whether she is autistic, or whats
the problem with her or she is normal. I am quite confused. Please help
us.

Hello,
As per your feedback I would suggest you to kindly get a diagnosis done of your child from a developmental pediatrics...He/She may be able to give you a correct diagnosis...There are some of the symptoms which indicates that your child needs therapy but unless a thorough assessment is done it´ s difficult for me to say what kind of therapy your child needs..

Subject:  two year old daughter´ s Speech issue

I have come across a lot of families with similar issues and am a parent of a kid with developmental delays.
Some kids are just late talkers and there would nothing to worry about this. In other cases, there could be other issues. My suggestion would be that you check with your child' s pediatrician and if that doesn' t help, check with a speech therapist.
In the meantime, you could try one strategy....do not give your child want she wants when she gestures to you. instead give her verbal options to choose from....for eg., if she wants to drink something, ask her if she wants juice or milk. Do not give in to her easily. Initially, she might get frustrated and when she sees you being adamant, she might try to voice out. At this point in time, don' t worry too much about articulation.
Also, try to get her to socialise with other kids if she is not already doing so.
And if you are too worried, seek professional advice and help.

Subject:  My Son also has the same features

Hi,
I just came across your post and was surprised to see the similarities between your daughter and my son.
My Son is now 2 yrs 2 months old. He is not talking yet. Does not respond to his name. Sometimes he turns his head but that' s a response to his name or to our voice we are not sure. He likes music/cricket match/ cartoons etc. Loves to play in water. Likes story books. But he only do what he likes. You can not make him do anything which he does not want to do. All depends on his mood.
Have you consulted anyone regarding your Daughter? From next week we are planning to see a occupational therapist. Please post some more information on how your daughter is doing.

Hello Shilpa,
My daughter had a similar problem until she turned 2. She understood everything that we said but did not speak. Also, when watching nursery rhymes over the CD, she used to try to lip-sync with the rhymes.

She knew all rhymes pretty well but did not sing any of them. We were a little worried about this. After she turned 2, we put her in a nearby playschool where she got to interact with other kids of the same age group. Within 2 weeks, she started uttering a few words. within a month, she started singing rhymes.. though not perfectly correct, you could guess what she was trying to say. Now, she is 2 1/2 and is trying to form sentences.

Speech/language delay - 2.3 yr old boy
Hello Everyone

Our 28 months old boy is not speaking simple 2 or 3 word sentences yet. He speaks a few words such as mama, papa, aunty etc but definitely not more than 10. Also, he doesn't understand slightly longer sentences, even when we speak slowly and enact it such as "we'll go out after we eat". Otherwise, he appears perfectly normal.
