Diet and Exercise:Bharatnatyam and pregnancy

I am a dancer and have a performance coming up soon. I might be pregnant and I was wondering if it is ok to continue to dance. If I am pregnant now, I will only be about 7-8 weeks when the performance is.

If anyone can answer my question, I would really appreciate it. I wont be showing then, so I can go ahead with the performance. But I also do not want to jeopardize my pregnancy...

FYI. I have had a miscarriage before, but not because of too much strain. I had a blighted ovum.

Dear Ani,

The first trimester is most sensitive one and until week 12 (that's 10 weeks after conceiption) are lot more sensitive and high risk of miscarriage.

Seven to Eight week of pregnancy is well progressed and I think you can check with your First Morning Urine and EPT test to confirm if you are pregnant. Should you want a crystal clear answer go to your Dr. and ask to order a blood beta-hCG for you. This will help knowing your pregnancy status.

I know Bharatnatyam is more exhausting and one would go through difficult balance steps while performance. Not trying to scare. I know if I would suggest to cancel your performance you won't like, career is also equally important. If that was me who will advice, the clear answer is stay away from such exhausting exercise during first and third trimester. But you should talk to your care provider to get approval or asking you to abstain from such activity.

Hope I have provided some insights it not a good advice.

Archie

Dear Ani,
If you missed period and negative EPT then wait for another two days.
If period does not show still then take test as follows
First Morning Urine
EPT
Follow dip method.
Record results in less than 3 minutes

If this is negative and no period then you need to see your Dr. for quantitative blood beta-hCG test.

Remember early detection will result failure, tests during day time without preventing urination for 4 hours will also reduce chances of getting positive in early days.

Good luck.

Hi Archie,

Thanks for the advice. I agree with you. Moreover, Bharatnatyam isn't my career....more like a hobby/interest/passion! So it wont be that hard letting it go for a few months.

I did do an EPT but it came out negative. I just missed my period the day I wrote the first message and it might have been too early. So I am not even sure I am pregnant yet!

Thanks for the advice! Will keep you updated.

diet during pregnancy
Maintaining a healthy diet during pregnancy is very important.

During this time, your body needs additional nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

In fact, you may need 350–500 extra calories each day during the second and third trimesters.

A diet lacking in key nutrients may negatively affect the baby’s development.
