Due Date Club January 2007:High glucose in blood (GST)

I just had my Glocose Screening Test and my doc says i have high glucose levels so will have to go for Glucose Tolerance Test (3 hr test).
My concerns are:

(1) Is high glucose levels high bad for baby?

(2) I don't eat much sugar,no icecream,no choclate, no sweets. Even in tea i put less sugar. then why my glucose level is high?

(3) What should i eat/do to before the 3 hr. test so that my sugar comes normal?

Your help/comments will be greally appriciated

Thanks,
Hetal

Hope you are the same Hetal from parents of babies board.with my first pregnancy i had GD and my level was 174 and in 3 hr test i got 3 of 4 test positive.it is not necessay that you will get your 3 hr test positive.but even if you get it,it is not a big thing to be worried.iam also in US and our hospital they asked me to consult Nutritionist.but she was of no use.she was not able to understant the food i eat and give me a better idea.so for luckmy gyno was indian so she suggested me food to east and exercise.the main thing to avoid was sweets, especially the sweets that are soaked in syrup, donuts, cakes with icing, soda pops, canned or bottled juices etc.and walking really helps to keep your Gd in controll.i had a normal delivary and my baby was healthy 6.9 pounds.so as archie suggested dont avoid food.evertyhing will be alright.best of luck.

hi Supriya,

Thanks a lot for your message. I'm first time mother and i'm not on parents of babies board. I did my 2nd GTT 3 hour test and it came out normal.
but i'm still trying to control sugar and try to walk and exercise a little everyday.
How are you doing? when is your due date? is it your 2nd baby?

Good luck,
Hetal

hi hetal,
Do not worry too much and you can not do anything to reduce the glucose level . Even my GTT came out positive during first pregnancy and i was advised to stay away from sweets, tea, sugar etc. Doc may give you a chart what to eat and what not to eat .
All the best,
Maya

Hi Maya

Thanks a lot for your reply. How much was yours in your first test, Mine is 177 and Doc said that normal should be below 140. Was your delivery normal or c-section when you had positive GTT.

i'm worried about c-section. i want to have a normal delivery.

Thanks,
Hetal

Hetal,
Sorry to hear that an hour GCT is failed and you will be going through 3 hr GTT to rule out GD possibility.

Typically a 3 hr GTT is done on empty stomach to obtain a fasting reading, a 100 gm glucose solution is offered to drink and at 60 minutes your blood will be taken for three hours. Of four if 2 or more readings are off you will be considered GD patient if you only exhibit one of the four in high range or all in range confirm no GD.

Typically, you should not go on dieting with ref to carbohydrate as you want to know real data for GD concern.

If you have GD you will be offered a nutrition chart to follow to see if that keeps glucose readings in limit. If that fails then insulin dosage.

GD has little to do with your diet and it's primarily due to change in glucose metabolism during pregnancy. This is not necessarily be concern to you or baby though some caution is required to maintain glucose values in range. A case of GD which remains identified due to management of diet prior to test or improper testing can raise a concern of macrosomic baby and or jaundice after childbirth. Of these two first might direct patient to C-section and second one is for baby to undergo phototherapy.

All in all you should not get stressed as stress is known to affect glucose metabolism.

Archie
