Due Date Club August 2007:Cots for New born babies

Hi,
Please suggest what kind of cots are good for new born babies. The wooden ones available in the market which can be used for upto 3-4 yrs, are they good to be used from the first week for the baby? Or is there a theory that babies may feel lost in those beds? Should the babies be made to sleep with the mother and in that case would there not be danger of SIDS?
Thanks
Shaveta

Agree with anitha. i did have a cradle for anushka whch did help when u can take an hours rest or so, esp in the 3rd and 4th month rocking helps. U get cradle/bassinet with rocking and fixed option. After she started moving in her sleep and sleeping 6-7 hours straight, around 6-7 months i moved her with me in the bed..much easier than looking over if she is ok ..if they do manage to sleep in the crib without moving around..great.
i do know friends whose kids didn' t adjust aywhere, neither cradle/bed..and for some bouncers helped..so try different options, all babies have a different level of comfort.
used to later fool anu i was close to her with my comforter color and print near her cradle..not sur eif its color or the smell of mom..she did use to sleep alone in the cradle then for long time. babies like consistency..and routine.so as long as u follow some routine it helps..
all the best

Hello Sweety,

All the suggestions that I have mentioned here are only based on info I have collected from other parents & my Lamaze counsellor.

1. Its always better to give the baby its own space for sleeping. This would avoid unwanted accidents like hurting the baby in our sleep, rolling over etc.
2. When you are buying a cot, buy a wooden cot with wooden railings. The cot should have both the rocking and fixed options. These type of cots help you to have a clearer look at the baby when you place the cot next to you. The baby can also look around and start recognizing the surroundings. Don’t buy the cute cloth cot with hood because baby’s get bored and closed in that.
3. Another important thing is baby’s learn from day 1. So, its advisable to put in some safe and colorful toys around & on top of the cradle for the lil’ one to look at, play and enjoy.
4. Also, put in some colorful hanging toys (plastic ones) in the area which you use to change your baby’s diaper (It could be your cot or a separate changing table). This distracts the baby away from the wet diaper & the nakedness and makes nappy time more delightful for you and the lil one.

I hope all this info helps you. All the best !!!

Regards,
Anitha
