Sleeping:how long will sleepless nights continue ??

Hi,
My son Madhav is now 2months old... from the begining he is awake all through the night. He cries a lot and wants constant feeding, I believe all this is normal and people say this can stop anytime from 3mts to a year.. what has been you experience ? What do I do to help increase his sleep at nights.
I am breastfeeding him and for the past 2 mts his weight gain has been fine, but of late I feel there may be less milk because even during daytime he hardly sleeps and seems to want continous feeding?Any idea how I could check if milk is less, except weight as I would have to go to the doctor for that.
Thanks ,
Priya

NeenaWW replied. Hello Priya,
In the early months, it's common for new babies to have a different sleep pattern. Though every baby is different, having had 2 babies recently, let me tell what worked for me.
1)Nurse on demand, when you're baby is hungry, start with the right breast, switch to the left breast when you notice the right breast is softer. The next nursing, do just the opposite. Your baby will get full if he has a chance to have the fore milk and the hind milk. There is fatty milk, this helps to fill your baby's tummy.
Another thing is, have your baby sleep close to you, if possible. Don't wait for him to wake, you just put him to your breast ahead of time, this will not start a bad habit, it will help increase your milk supply and also help your baby sleep longer.
It's hard to gauge the amount of milk you baby drinks, make sure he is wetting frequently and pooping soft yellowish stools several times per day.
You must drink lots of fluids throughout the day. You will dehydrate and your milk supply will drop without having adequate water. Avoid caffiene as much as possible.
As Raj said, a pump is also a good idea, but, to avoid over working yourself, I would stick to nursing directly.
A pump is a great way to increase your supply...If you have access to a Medela Hospital grade breast pump or a Avent Isis pump, you can have an easy time...if you plan to go with pump.
Let us know how it works.

My little one is also 2 months old. I use to breastfeed her, but reacently i started to pump. I asked my Doc that how much she should be having in one serving. She told me that 4 oz. every 3-4 hrs. So, I think if u pump then u will know how much ur baby is drinking. If you are in US, u can rent or buy breatpump. I find Medila pump very good. hope this helped u in some way. let me know if it dose. ok
Bye

My baby girl is unable to sleep properly due to skin rashes. I have resumed oil massages to help calm her down and facilitate better sleep, using CITTA Baby Massage Oil. Additionally, I am applying the ointment recommended by her doctor for the rashes. Could you please provide me with more ideas that can promote better sleep for her?... - Sanchari Tarafdar [View Message]

RE:How to Develop a Sleep Routine for your Newborn
According to me this is good but then you cannot force your child to sleep as per your wish as kids as really bad in this and they have a tendency to sleep in day and get up in late night so according to me this is not the key to success, please post if i am wrong.... - Anita [View Message]
