Due Date Club December 2005:question on thumb sucking

Hi all,
Hows everyone doing. I had a questions. My daugher( 2months old) is slowly mastering the art of thumb/wrist sucking. Her frequency of sucking is increasing day by day. I know its normal for babies to do this at this stage but what I wanted to know is shoudl we allow her to suck on her thumb or should we be giving her pacifier. I was reading & also many friends are suggesting that pacifier is better since the habbit can be stopped earlier & its in our control.while if kids get used to thumb sucking it might take years to get rid of the habbit.
Whats your opinion abt this? Pls share.

Thanks
Meghana

hi meghana
howz aashana ?
is it thumb sucking or thumb/wrist chewing?
firstly if it is thumb or wrist chewing and does it happen just befre feed time .that is indication fr hunger.
also if thumb sucking then it indicates an urge to suck so first try giving breast fr longer time so that the craving to suck mre is satisfied.so it is imp she is fed mre fr a longer period so that her urge to suck is satisfied.
but my second kid never used to feed fr long time so in such cases it will be a problem.
Dr.benjamin sock suggests pacifier.nd he says as soon as the baby is trying to thumb suck befre she succeeds to do it easily pacifiers shd be started.
but i personally feel that will be another problem to handle at a later stage.
so best try feeding fr a longer time.
all the best
nandini

My lil-one is also becoming expert in this habbit. Sometimes in night i get awake by this noise of sucking his thumb/wrist.
Well, i don't know its good or bad to allow him doing this, but we enjoy these actions and the sounds.

Very good doctor
Hi,

I delived a baby boy in March 2009. I consulted Dr.Chitra Ramamurthy during my pregnancy cycle. She' s one of the best doctors in Bangalore. Not many people know about her. She handled the entire process in a very professional manner. I used to visit her clinic in Jayanagar 3rd block. She is very caring and affable. She says what to do and what not to do. ... - Sandhya Rao [View Message]

So long as your baby is feeding, that' s all that really matters. These days, formulas are packed with everything the baby needs, and although it is never as good as breast milk, it' s perfectly fine. It sounds like maybe what you are missing is the bonding that breast feeding provides? My first child had both breast and bottle milk for the first 6 months, when I had a mis... - Jhumri [View Message]
