Routine Tests:AFP - Level 2 Sonogram

Hi,

My AFP test in first trimister came negative. They did again in Second trimister, it came out positive for trisomy 18. So my gynec suggested for level 2 sonogram. Yesterday they did this. Doctor said, Baby is just perfect. Physically she has no problem. everything is fine.

My doubt is should i go for Amniosis test or not.

And the doctor mentioned after screening, the chances of down syndrome and trisomy 18 are 1 in 10,280 cases.

How can I decide should I go for Amniosis or not.

I am 29 year old and my husband is 39 year old. Does it matters? and no one in my family are not having this problem

Please help me by giving your suggestions.

Thank you.
Savitha

I have gone through a similar experience 2 weeks back. My risk of having down syndrome baby was 1/122. I had gone for my 2nd level ultrasound which showed the baby is growing normal. I decided to go for amnio, it was a difficult decision considering the risk involved. I had amnio last Friday, It was not painful and I am doing fine, just waiting for the results. I would suggest if you want to be sure and enjoy the rest of pregnanacy go for it. I know I cried for 3 days before I finally decided that I cannot live like this for next 5 months.

Savita,
It would not hurt to get amnioscentis done. It will only reassure all well beings of fetus and let you enjoy remaining pregnancy.
